Creating a Dinosaur Themed Big Boy Bedroom for my Son

Creating a Dinosaur Themed Big Boy Bedroom for my Son

As my son approached four-years-old, we’ve been giving a lot of thought to giving him a ‘big boy’ bedroom. Currently he sleeps in the smallest room in the house, which has Winnie the Pooh wallpaper. Essentially it’s the nursery but we’ve dismantled the cot and added a bed, but now I think he’s ready for something a bit more grown up.

In case my previous posts about dinosaur toys and dinosaur magazines didn’t give it away, we’re a bit dinosaur mad in our house (I say ‘we’. but it’s mostly Greg forcing us to try and pronounce stupidly long names, and us looking a bit silly).

I would love it if I could set Greg up in a dinosaur themed bedroom by Christmas. I know it would make him feel so grown up if he had a bigger bedroom that was decorated in a way he had chosen. I love the dinosaur wallpaper mural designs Wallsauce currently have on their site. This one is really pleasant looking, without being too babyish.

Some of the other deigns have quite fierce looking designs that would be really cool for a bigger boy of maybe six or seven. I love the realistic ones, but I fear they may be a little too realistic my almost-four-year-old (even if he is a very brave super hero). I quite like this one too:

The dinosaur in this one looks really cute and friendly, but the first photo is still my favourite.

The murals are quite a treat because they’re made to measure, which makes me feel like we’re really posh for getting some bespoke decor. The website says it’s a two-man job so I’m unsure whether or not to hire someone to help, I assume my husband and I could probably tackle it though. I’m happy to invest the money in making the wall look nice, because I expect it to last a while, so I’ll probably slowly replace things in his room as he gets older (keeping the theme, of course!).

In order to keep the costs down, I probably won’t be buying a new bed just yet as his toddler bed is still a good size for him (and close to the ground in case he rolls out). I’ll get some new dino related bedding, and look for a lamp shade and curtains to match. The carpet in his new room is dark blue, which I think is perfect for any bedroom decor anyway, so that will be staying too, but I might keep an eye out for a cool dinosaur rug.

As he gets older I intend to put his original chest of drawers back in the nursery and buy him a wardrobe and chest of drawers that match the colours of the wall mural. That way, we avoid dinosaur overkill but his room will still look grown up and cool for when he has school friends over to play.

I’m really excited to start this interiors project when the summer holidays end (I’d be mad to start it during, wouldn’t I?). I’ll keep you all posted on my dino decor when I get to work!
