How to Prepare your Home for Winter

Cold weather needs some preparation. If you don’t get your home ready for those chilly days, you could end up cold, bored and in need of some cosy inspiration.

As someone who is often pretty cold, I feel I’m somewhat of an expert when it comes to preparing your home for winter. I love to hibernate with a few box sets, a pile of books and my home as cosy as it can possibly be.

My Top 5 Favourite Ways to Prepare My Home for Winter

Since I’m a self-proclaimed expert in cosiness, it only seems right that I share my favourite ways to prepare for winter. It seems like it’s been cold for months already, but darkest depths of winter are yet to come. It might even snow – if we’re lucky!

How to Prepare your Home for Winter

1. Prepare for a Log Fire

A real fire is about as cosy as you can get. There’s something about the comforting crackling sounds and the orange glow of the dancing flames that makes me feel extra toasty whenever I see it. Prepare by making sure your chimney is clear before winter hits and buying coal in ready. Investing in some coal sacks for the home will make it easier to store and transport your coal in without making a mess.

2. Exclude all Drafts

Did you know you that you can lose a substantial amount of heat through draughts in your home? Not ideal! Insulated curtains are a great solution for keeping the heat in around windows. They’re thicker than regular curtains, and after a surge in popularity in recent years, there are lots of beautiful styles on the market now.

Another handy investment is a draught excluder. This might sound like advice that your granny might give you, but she would be a wise woman if she did. Draught excluders sit inside your room at the bottom of closed doors and block any cold air getting in (and any warm air getting out). They too have had a bit of a comeback in recent years meaning you can now get some fun and funky ones from Handmade selling sites.

3. Line up Your Watch Lists

Colder months beg for you to stay indoors and get hooked on binge watching your favourite box sets. Do yourself a favour and create a ‘watchlist’ that you can add to as and when you spot something that interests you. That way you won’t lose evenings asking your significant other what you should watch, before trawling through every option imaginable!

4. Go Oldschool To Get Warm

You’re already on the rustic route with the log fires and draught excluders, it makes sense to carry on and keep those heating bills low. Wrap up warm when you’re lounging around by picking up the fluffiest dressing gown you can find. Thick socks and slipper boots will stop your toes tingling with the cold, and a hot water bottle will warm your bed before you hop in. Throws and blankets are great for decoration at this time of year, and even better for keeping you warm. When they’re not in use they make for nice decorations, but if you’re cold, they’re easily accessible.

5. Stock up on Hot Drinks

Warm yourself up on the inside and the outside will follow. A hot cup of anything is always a treat when its freezing outdoors, my personal favourite is hot chocolate. If you’re going down the hot chocolate route too, I suggest you treat yourself to a big bag of marshmallows for an ultimate taste of luxury!
