It’s only been autumn for about five minutes, but the temperature has plummeted as if the hot summer were just a distant memory. Leaves are falling, the wind has picked up, and the air is cold when school finishes. We’ve already dug out our winter coats for the way home from school and we’re ready for some cosy nights in.
5 Ways to Keep Heating Costs Low & Your Family Warm
There are a few ways to keep from spending too much in the plight to keep your little ones warm. If you’re worried about the cost of having the heating on around the clock, then check out these money saving tips to stay warm.
1. Layer up!
If there’s a nip in the air, try wrapping up around the house. Get the kids to put a jumper on over their tops, or a fluffy dressing gown on over their pyjamas. There’s no need to go overboard, but if wearing something woolly will keep you and the kids warm, it’s probably worth doing that before you reach for the thermostat.
2. Check & maintain your radiators
Last year we had a problem with my daughter’s radiator. It wasn’t getting very warm, but it didn’t need bleeding. The only way to make it warmer was to turn the thermostat up for the whole house. Obviously this wasn’t a very energy efficient solution, so we got someone out to look at it. The problem was simple, it needed a new valve, and once it was repaired, it kept our heating costs down. Some businesses will let you buy the part from somewhere like Trade Radiators, then only charge you for labour. This also helps save money, so don’t forget to ask!
3. Get you boiler checked
An inefficient boiler can cost you loads over the course of a year. If it’s working extra hard to heat the water and push it round, it’s using a lot more energy than a newer boiler might. If you suspect your boiler is on its last legs, get it checked, and look into boiler replacement schemes to make getting a new one more affordable. 4. Invest in some blankets
It might sound obvious but if you’re after cosy, a blanket is the only thing that will do! For added warmth, snuggle up with your kids and get your favourite films cued up on Netflix. Extra bodies under the blanket = extra heat, so enjoy the cuddles and keep your heating bill low!
5. Belly Warmers
Warming up from the inside, out is always comforting in cold weather. Cook stews and soups in your slow cooker for warm and hearty meals. When it’s not a mealtime, warm drinks like hot chocolate are a real treat! Stack up the marshmallows and pile on the cream for luxury hot chocolate that’s totally Instagrammable! Try these winter stew or healthy chilli slow cooker recipes for inspiration.
These top tips should help keep your whole family cosy, without your energy bills shooting up.
