Getting involved in local support groups, community projects and volunteering efforts regardless of your age can give you a different perspective, build relationships and bridge gaps in your knowledge. To get your child involved in community projects, here are some reasons from a nursery in Putney as to why it’s important for children and young adults.
Allows children to open up to others
Volunteering at a local care home, or helping at a charity shop will open your child’s eyes to what they’re doing when they’re offering support. Children are able to learn about common issues that they may not even be aware of and how they can help on a regular basis. Volunteering for different charities will make them learn about different diseases, causes and rescue centres that would greatly benefit from greater awareness.

As a result of this, children are able to be more open and honest towards their friends and family. They’re less likely to take things for granted and have the chance to help more communities by sharing their messages.
Increased socialisation skills
Children will be interacting with a number of different people for various reasons when they’re taking part in community involvement projects. They often have to work within a team in order to get things done on time and completed efficiently. If your child’s volunteering at a charity shop for instance, then they’ll be working with other colleagues to manage the shop floor, speaking to customers and offering assistance where needed.
Builds a sense of community
Your child’s making new friends and learning how to communicate with other people that relate to a common cause. It’s also a great way to form relationships with others and speak to people about your own thoughts and ways to work with local authorities on charity work and so on. Children can bring these to their school to raise more awareness about local initiatives to entice students to also get involved.
