Love Island

Unpopular Opinion: Love Island’s Megan ISN’T Nasty, She’s Just a Bit Dim

This is my first year watching Love Island, so forgive me if I’m missing something, but I think everybody who says how awful Megan is, is wrong. I’m not being deliberately controversial, so please hear me out.

Megan was sent into the house to be a temptress and break a ‘couple’ up. Everybody already had a partner, but Dr Alex Sunburn was only in a friendship couple. There was also Eyal, who had just decided Hayley wasn’t for him, despite having known for days that she thought being spiritual meant he could see ghosts (was that not a clue about your lack of compatibility, Eyal?). This meant Megan had the option to not break up any happy couplings, which she wisely went for in the beginning.

I imagine it was a difficult choice to decide who was least repulsive between the slightly creepy doctor, and the slow talking Eyal. It turns out, Eyal had a really good technique for disguising there was nothing going on in his brain by telling everyone how zen he was (if you tell people you’re being zen while staring into space, they think you’re clever and never cotton on that you brain is full of tumbleweed!). Megan was clearly fooled by this and was briefly wooed by him.

Inexplicably, Megan slept with Eyal, despite finding him boring, and when he told her she wasn’t fun enough, she ditched him on the spot. Knowing that in order to survive in the game, she needed a partner, she pounced on poor, suggestible Wes.

This is where Twitter went wild and everyone started calling Megan a snake. I thought it, too. Poor Laura! I exclaimed in the group Whatsapp! But in the days and weeks since, my opinion has changed.

After stealing Wes off Laura, Megan spent some time tottering around lamenting the lack of female friends in her life (surely evidence of being a bit stupid?).

Despite going after Wes and having a desired outcome in mind, I don’t think she executed any sort of evil plan. All she really did was ask if he could be happier while fluttering some floozy eyes his way and licking her artificially enhanced lips. She definitely hoped she could turn his head, but she wasn’t exactly a mastermind. I suspect if someone asked her exactly how she was able to steal Wes, she wouldn’t actually know.

If Love Island has taught us anything, you can’t steal a man who doesn’t want to be stolen (I don’t think Jack has so much as glanced at another woman.)

What about when Megan ditched Wes for myopic Alex? I hear your cry! Or the time she kissed that other beardy guy whose name we’ve already forgotten? Well, this is where my stupidity theory started to grow. She seemed perpetually confused from the moment Wes left. I don’t think she was particularly ‘muggy’, she just wanted to stay in the game. It was kind of mean, but she seemed to think she needed to pick someone.

Then Wes came back, alone and sad, but Megan continued to kiss and sleep next to new Alex, while telling Wes she still liked him. She even told Alex she still fancied Wes. Definitely another clue that she’s not that bright!

It takes bold person to confront the woman whose boyfriend you stole and question how she dare say said boyfriend can do better. It takes a bold person, or a person who isn’t all that bright.

And now, she’s back in the arms of Wes, telling him she loves him only a few days after kicking her other, bespectacled bedfellow to the curb. These are not the actions of someone with their head screwed on. I don’t even think it’s a game tactic. I just think she says whatever comes into her head before she waits to see if her thoughts stick around.

I know it’s cruel to write 600+ words on why I think someone on TV might be a bit thick, but honestly I’m sticking up for her! Everyone thinks she’s evil to the core, but being dim is forgivable, being evil; less so.
