Getting your first tattoo can be a big decision. It’s easy to get overwhelmed when it comes to planning it then finally booking it in. That’s why I’m writing this helpful guide of things to consider when you’re getting a tattoo for the very first time.
I’m at an age where some of my friends have been steadily getting tattoos for years, while others are taking the plunge in their mid thirties. I can understand why some people might be more nervous when they’re looking into in their thirties, compared to teens going for their first inking when they’re eighteen.
If you like to plan and it’s taken fifteen years to finally pluck up the courage to get a tattoo, then this guide will help you get prepared for a great experience.
Choose the tattoo studio
It’s really important you use the right tattoo studio for you. Are they recommended by a friend? Do they have a fab reputation and you’re willing to travel? Have you been following them on Instagram and just feel like this is the right place for you?
You want to be at ease when someone is coming at you with a needle, to don’t just rush your decision when it comes to who will tattoo you. You’ll probably want to pop into the studio and chat about your tattoo before booking in, so it might be worth bringing a friend to make sure it passes the vibe check.
Tattooists are both artists and professionals, so it’s likely anywhere you go will take good care of you. This means you need to narrow it down by looking at the work your tattoo artist has done in the past and make sure it’s in line with the style you want.

Consider the design and size of the tattoo
The only thing I can say here really, is if in doubt, go small and discreet. It’s bold to go for a full colour back piece done when you’ve never been tattooed before. Plus, you might not be as brave as you thought you were and the sight of the needle might fill you with fear. You might laugh, but it does happen!
My advice would be to make a Pinterest board of the types of designs you like. It would also be helpful to follow a few tattoo artists on Instagram and favourite any inspiration. Lots of people go for a small line tattoo on their wrist, foot or thigh for their first. It’s not usual to fall in love with tattoos and go for many more once you’ve had your first.
Is it going to be a matching tattoo?

Matching tattoos are a super cute way to be forever connected to someone special in your life. Popular relationships for matching tattoos are often between sisters, partners or best friends. This means there’s always that slight risk that you’ll eventually drift apart from that person and be stuck with a tattoo that you might not have chosen (and that reminds you of them every day).
If your first tattoo is going to be a matching one, then think very hard about it. Are you getting it for the right reasons? Do you actually want a tattoo? Do you like the design or was it chosen by them? I’d also advise to stay away from names or initials, because if you become estranged from that person, you’ll be explaining yourself for the rest of your life (or until you get a cover up).
When you get a matching tattoo, make sure you’re happy with the design, and that you’re 100% certain you’d like a tattoo.
Read up on aftercare
It’s important that you look after a new tattoo properly. This helps with how your skin heals and how your tattoo will look in the future. If you make sure you know what aftercare is expected after your tattoo then that will help you book it at time you can properly care for it.
It’s no good getting a tattoo the day before a Spanish beach holiday where you’re likely to spend your days in the sea or at risk of getting burnt. Proper care promotes good healing and keeps your tattoo looking neat and vivid for years to come.
