A child’s imagination is wild and free and should be encouraged rather than made to suppress. Don’t underestimate the importance of imaginative play. When your child puts their hand to their ear and pretends to be on the phone or uses a stick as a sword, encourage this behaviour! Kids with a healthy imagination view the world in with curiosity and grow to be creative problem solvers who find success. Here are a few ways to get started.

Read together. Reading isn’t something that is subject to the classroom, it is something that is encouraged to do at home too. Helping your child develop a long-term love for reading is one of the best ways to spark their imagination. Start off small with picture books for the little ones and work your way up. Take them to a library and allow them to explore different genres. Once your child has found the type of book they enjoy, there is no going back. Reading to them from an early age is the best way to broaden their horizons.
Play together. Creativity and imagination are fundamental as they help create the foundation for skills your child will need later on in life. Sometimes hectic schedules can get in the way which means it is time for you to use your imagination to play games with your child! I spy can be played anywhere and is both fun and imaginative. Play word games and see how far you get along. The best part is, this is a great bonding activity for parents who struggle to find the time to sit with their children.
Finally, go outdoors. It may seem simple to start with but the great outdoors is full of life and fuels the imagination. Pack a lunch and go for a walk to your local nature reserve or beach. Lay on a blanket and look out for different types of birds and other animals. This is an activity that you can get the whole family involved in too!
