*AD – We received the Frozen II True Friendship board game for the purpose of this review
As a family, we love spending time together to play games. Greg, our youngest, is now five and can join in with most of the games we use. My daughter, Emma is nearly 11, so has been able to play games with us for quite some time. Now that both kids can play games properly, we try and all play together at least once a week.
We were really excited to receive the Frozen II board game – True Friendship, as both kids are fans of the first film and we have a family outing planned to watch the sequel.
Frozen II Board Game – True Friendship Review
Before we get to the game play, I just want to point out how beautifully designed this board game is. The rich colours and 3D elements really bring the game to live. It’s lovely to look at and all of the pieces feel like they’re great quality. It’ll definitely make an impressive-looking gift under any Disney Frozen-lover’s tree!
True Friendship board game set up
The game comes flat-packed in a large box, the idea is that you set up the elements to play, then pack them away flat again for storage.
The characters have clear plastic stands to allow them to stay upright, and the trees have secret tokens as part of their base – each one with a different meaning.
Instead of dice, there is a ‘wind spinner’ that tells the user what to do for their go. Although the game is for 4+, I think you’ll need an adult or an older child present to assist with the basic set-up. My five-year old was eager to help, but too excited to follow direction!
How to play the Frozen II True Friendship board game
The aim of the game is to reach Elsa at the other side of the board. Play as characters Anna, Kristoff, Olaf or Sven and work together to get to Elsa. There’s only one problem – you must reach her before the Water Nokk beat you to it. It’s a race against time!
If the spinner lands on the image of the Water Nokk witha +1, then it must move one step closer to Elsa. If the image has a -1 next to it, then your luck’s in and the Water Nokk must move away from her.
If you pass or land on a leaf symbol, you have to pick up a tree and look at the picture on the counter on its base. be careful though, there’s a risk the Water Nokk could get closer to Elsa.
Our Verdict
The game is lots of fun, but if you’ve got a younger player, they might need a bit of help following. It’s not as straightforward as some other games for that age group.
It’s a lovely game for Frozen fans and a very beautiful set up. Any child would love to receive this gorgeous board game as a gift!
