DC Comics characters have been around since the 1930s. From their inception to the mid-1950s, a 20-year period commonly referred to as “The Golden Age,” DC established a roster of superheroes that achieved unprecedented popularity. In the decades since, with not only a robust lineup of comic books but also myriad film and television properties, DC continues to set the gold standard for sequential art and storytelling.
The next step in the DC’s evolution is “Stargirl,” a new CW series from executive producer Geoff Johns. Haven’t tuned in yet? Here are three reasons why you should add “Stargirl” to your watchlist.
1. It’s an Action-Packed Twist on the Teen Drama
“Stargirl” tells the story of Courtney Whitmore, a naïve high school gymnast who discovers the cosmic staff of the late Starman. The powerful weapon turns her into the titular Stargirl. It’s through this unique, action-packed lens that the series examines the familiar world of teenage angst and drama.
Blend the trials of being a teen with blow-it-up fight scenes, metaphysical intervention, ninja-laden gymnastic moves, and an epic battle between good and evil, and you have a recipe for thrilling entertainment. “One Tree Hill” this is not.
2. Stargirl Herself Is Thoroughly Relatable
There’s no shortage of things to watch on TV, but just because streaming provides viewers with seemingly limitless choices, it doesn’t mean that all shows are equally worth your time.
“Stargirl” is. The refreshing series features a female heroine who demonstrates bravery and tackles problems head-on, providing valuable life lessons for all ages.
She’s not an emotionless, roundhouse-kicking robot, though; Courtney experiences a lack of confidence, insecurities, and the “Am I good enough?” self-doubt that many teens — and adults, for that matter — routinely face.
Being a teen, she also makes questionable choices that turn into opportunities to learn and grow. In short, she shows that superheroes are human too.
3. She’s Still a Superhero, Though
Standing up for what you believe in is a timeless story line, and it’s central to “Stargirl.” For as much as she’s a relatable teen, she’s still a powerful superhero.
The series’ first season sees Stargirl becomes the leader of the reestablished Justice Society of America, a DC Comics staple. Without giving anything away, new viewers and comic book fans alike can look forward to the JSA confronting the sinister Brainwave as well as Icicle, the leader of the aptly named Injustice Society of America.
“Stargirl” is a new superhero show for a new era of comic book fans. Its deft mix of high-octane, out-of-this-world action and identifiable themes of insecurity, friendship and trying to do what’s right offer something for everyone. Cozy up to this new era of powerful DC superheroes.
