What to Do if Your Child Doesn’t Enjoy School

No parent likes the thought of their child having a rough time at school, but realistically, all children will likely struggle at some stage or another. They may experience challenges with academic subjects or face unforeseen friendship problems. They might have anxiety over upcoming exams or find the workload challenging. As a parent, it’s your job to step in and support your child when they’re not enjoying school, using the following tips from a private prep school in London.

Provide a Listening Ear

If your child expresses negative emotions towards school, try not to dismiss their statements. Be there for them and provide a non-judgemental listening ear or shoulder to cry on so that they feel they have someone they can share their concerns with. Ask them questions about why they might be feeling that way so that you can get to the bottom of the situation and be in a better position to resolve it. For instance, if it comes to light that someone is bullying them, you can arrange to speak to the teachers. Perhaps it could be something easily rectified, like they’re struggling to see the whiteboard from the back of the classroom, in which case a trip to the opticians should help.

Don’t Let Your Child Constantly Have Days Of

Avoiding their problems won’t help resolve them, so try not to let your child take regular days off, unless they are genuinely poorly. If they’re anxious about something going on at school, staying at home won’t take that anxiety away, it will only make it worse.

Be a Positive Role Model

When chatting to your child about school, try and be as positive and optimistic as possible. Avoid phrases like “I hated science as a child” or “I was rubbish at maths when I was your age”, because that will only teach your child to have a negative outlook towards their school subjects. If your child is already struggling at school, you don’t want to fuel the fire. Instead, demonstrate an upbeat approach and enthusiastic towards learning.

Communicate with the School

Teachers have the same goal as you – to ensure your child is happy and successful during their school years. With that said, don’t be afraid to communicate regularly with them, as they will be able to help you get to the bottom of any concerns that you or your child may have. They may even be able to provide you with additional context so that you are better able to support your child at home and offer appropriate advice.
