Literature is such an integral part of education that it would be difficult to imagine the school curriculum without it. It can aid everyone to gather a better understanding of culture and has a major impact on the development of society. Here are some reasons as to why Literature in so important in education.
Develops Key Skills
Literature allows children to develop a variety of key skills that they will be able to bring with them in further education and across the curriculum. I have teamed up with a private college in the UK to explore these skills in more detail below.
In young children, especially throughout primary school, literature will teach them concentration skills and they can learn how to sit still for a longer period of time. They will also pick up imagination skills as they are reading which will encourage them to develop their creativity as they visualise chapters, characters, and settings.
In older children, throughout secondary school and GCSE periods, literature will help them further expand their critical thinking about a range of different subjects, that can increase their confidence for important exams. English literature in general is essay based which is overall a huge skill to be able to have, as it allows them to carry out an argument and be able to back it up with evidence using thorough research, while also ensuring their grammar and spelling is all correct.

Reading books allows children to explore life from the perspective of the characters, who may be from a different time period or have different cultural or socio-economic backgrounds. As a result, literature helps to understand social trends over time and the influence it has on culture. It involves emotions as well which adds to motivation and may contribute to personal development in people of all ages. It is a huge value to student’s general education.
