History is a core part of the curriculum as it teaches children lessons from the past and about who they are. While it’s behind us, history is valuable to where we’re headed as a society. We can take note from past failings and improve. On a more individual level, it helps children in forming their own identities as they can learn about their culture and who they are. Here are some interesting points that were shared with us by a prep school in Hertfordshire.
Lessons
Going back to the lessons that we can learn, there’s something that we can learn from everyone, especially those from the past. We can learn about everything from the spread of infection and disease to ancient medicines that were once used. Historians till this day are looking into what we can extract and learn about the past from things like fossils and messages left behind in the form of Egyptian hieroglyphs.
Teaches Us to Be Better
Another thing is that it allows us to reflect on the awful things that have happened in history such as the Holocaust, war, and famines etc. It teaches us how to be better people and delivers key messages like why we should be compassionate and help others.
Appreciation
There’s much that we have to credit to others when it comes to where we are today. Our way of life is thanks to our allies and those that have fought for our country. Just as well, it’s important to remember the atrocities that others faced in the building of it such as colonialism and the dark side of the British Empire.
Career Opportunities
The career opportunities that history opens up are far and wide. The subjects can help them to work for NGO’s, the media and much more.
