Journaling offers many great benefits. It’s a reflective activity that encourages children to be more mindful of their blessings and their everyday life. They can document their thoughts, feelings, the things they need to get done as well as everything that they have to be grateful for. Routinely writing also strengthens core skills such as creativity, handwriting, fine motor skills and memory. We have more below on the benefits of journaling from an upper school in Hampstead.
Organisation
Journaling is a practical way to stay organised. While they may have fewer priorities, it’s just as important for children to find and establish systems that help them keep on top of things like their homework etc.
Mental Health
Reflection is good for mental health. Often, we bottle our emotions and it’s this what leads to problems later down the line. When writing about their day, children are encouraged to check with themselves about their feelings. They can express their frustrations and feel better having let it out.

Creativity
We all have a creative side. Random eureka moments throughout the day. A journal gives children a way to record them and expand on their ideas.
Fine Motor Skills
When we write we use what are known as fine motor skills. They are the skills that we use to pinch, grip and hold, like when using a pen or a pencil. These are built in their early years and must be worked on to strengthen which is what journaling does perfectly.
Perspective
Sometimes when things happen, we’re unable to see the bigger picture. Journaling allows children to gain perspective, step away from their problems and view them from the point of view of an outsider.
