Taking a Job You Hate: 3 Things To Remember

If you want to make a career change, you may think that you’ve got to put up with a lot of agro, especially in the short term. When you are trying to build up a career or you are in a role that you think is going to take you somewhere, should you really stay put when you are in a job that you don’t want or completely hate? It’s not easy, especially when there are mouths to feed, but what are the things that you need to consider in the grand scheme of things?

Are There Perks?

A lot of the time we can take a job based on the perks and other times we keep our job based on fear. We may feel that we need to stay in a role just in case something else doesn’t come up. And the fact is that in many environments, you can feel unsupported but even worse, you can feel like you are unsafe. In many work environments, they can exploit your sense of fear, especially if you are doing a zero-hours contract or are in a role that is a thankless task, for example, if you’re working in contact centres. But the fact is when you are lower down the pecking order, this doesn’t mean you should be exploited, abused, or bullied. If you ever feel like this, you need to speak up, or if necessary, take it to a no win no fee employment solicitor. When you’re in a job where you feel unsafe, it’s always better to focus on your happiness, even if this means claiming benefits in the short term.

Does the Good Outweigh the Bad?

If the role is long hours but will look amazing on your CV or there is a part of the role that doesn’t appeal to you, if the good outweighs the bad, this could be worth sticking it out. You’ve got to see if it will build up your career. If you have been doing the same job for years, has it just got to the point where the role is stale? However, if the good outweighs the bad, for example, it’s a role that gives you a lot of flexibility, is it worth keeping in the short-term just until the children get older for something that’s more suitable comes along?

Are There Any Other Options?

Sometimes, we have to take a job for the paycheck. And in the short term, it’s easier to find something like this that will keep you going, rather than making you anxious that you are struggling to stay afloat. If this is you, make sure that you don’t highlight any sense of desperation when you are going through the interview. It is a job that will keep you going in the short term and therefore, you should focus on doing your best work rather than feeling resentful of the role.

It’s certainly not easy, but if you find yourself in this position, these are some things that you should bear in mind.
