Working from home is the dream for many. With those tied to corporate life, the simple idea of working from home and in comfort can be tantalizing. There are plenty of ways we can work from home. We might have remote working opportunities, we might run a business from home, we might work freelance from home – all of these can see us setting up shop within our own four walls. Frankly, it’s never been easier to do your own thing from home be it a blog or a business (or both).
However, it’s not always what it is cracked up to be. While working from home might seem like a breeze, it’s often not. If you’re a mum, you might realize some difficulties early on – as your business, chores and family life starts to blend, which can create quite the fuzz in your mind.
You have to realize that if you start working from home, you sacrifice a lot of benefits you might take for granted. You might not have Health Assured services like a bigger business for your peace of mind. You might not have a PAYE scheme that helps you with your taxes. A lot of creature comforts that come with corporate life can disappear when you start working from home – so prepare to do a lot more work to make yourself happier if you’re working from home.
Safety isn’t something we can take for granted though when we start to work from home. Plenty of businesses have health and safety concerns, but working from home has a few. It might have fewer than corporate life, but if you’re not considering safety at work, you should prepare to deal with the consequences.
For the most part, safety in the home office in a physical sense is also common sense. Don’t look in the scanner, keep your fingers out of the shredder, make sure you are sitting upright and make sure you take a break. That latter aspect is incredibly important, because when we think about safety at home, we need to think more so about our mental health – which is just as important as our physical health.
Working from home isn’t easy – you need to be dedicated and responsible for your own productivity, and this can take a toll on you and how you feel. That’s why breaks are so important. It can be all too easy to charge ahead with your workload while disregarding what you are feeling or thinking. It can be very easy to crash because of this. If you are disciplined about your work, be disciplined about your breaks and take 15 minutes every few hours to take in some fresh air and get out a bit. With working from home, you can get a bit trapped sometimes.
Health is always a concern, even if you are working from home. If you’ve got a lot of responsibilities, you might want to think twice about heaping them on. A breakdown isn’t always easy to bounce back from. Always consider your safety and your health when you work, even if you are working from the comfort of your own home. Earning a bit more money on the side often isn’t worth your health.
