Protecting Your Child’s Long-Term Health: 3 Simple (and Effective) Measures

As parents, we all feel that we’ve got to protect their best interests in every aspect of their lives. Whether it’s when they’re online or they are learning about the world around them, there’s a lot that we may feel we’ve got to safeguard. But it’s so difficult to be an effective parent in this respect because we’ve got to make sure they have the knowledge to deal with everything ahead of them in their lives. And this means being a positive influence in the home environment. Of course, being a positive role model is about making sure that your child knows how to protect themselves. With this in mind, specifically in terms of their health, how can we make sure we are providing protection for them?

Minimising Allergic Reactions

It’s so difficult to know if our children have an allergy or intolerance to something. While one approach may suggest that you’ve got to keep allergens completely away from them, you’ve also got to remember that, as humans, it’s possible to build up a tolerance but you need to notice when they are experiencing any allergic symptoms, like sneezing or itchy eyes. The best thing that you can do in your home environment is to reduce allergens in the air. If you are living in an environment where you are a sitting duck as far as allergens are concerned, for example, in a flat, you may want to think about getting a duct cleaning company to remove spores and allergens from the ducts that come into your flat. Allergens make anybody’s lives miserable, and as soon as you start noticing your children have any allergies, it’s important to jump on this.

Training Them to Eat Better

The hardest thing any parent has in front of them is getting their children to eat better. Sugary treats are infinitely tastier and this means that we’ve got to reduce those temptations. Sometimes you may think that because your child is a picky eater you are better off giving them something rather than nothing. This certainly makes sense, but you’ve also got to remember that food is about how it looks as well as how it tastes. Making food that looks amazing is the first stage. Additionally, you’ve got to minimise choice. We have too much choice in this day and age, so removing any junk food in your cupboards and fridge and replacing them with healthier options like wholemeal bread is a good start.

Any Moving Is Better Than No Moving at All!

While we should encourage our children to exercise, it’s far better for us to encourage them to play. This is going to work better in the long run because we all have an ongoing battle with the idea of exercise which is why we have to remember the fundamentals of exercising involves getting the heart rate going. So rather than telling them to play sports or run around when they really don’t want to, you should just ask them to go and play!
