The love of reading should be an important part of every child’s life. It broadens their world, sparks their imagination and encourage a life-long thirst for knowledge. In other words, it’s a handy life skill that should be encouraged in every child.
If your child can’t read, then reading to them is the next best thing – I always think it should be done alongside independent reading anyway (at least until the child is big enough to tell you to go away!)
Finding Engaging Books is Important
As a mother-of-three, I’ve found that each child is different when it comes to reading. They’ll progress at a different pace and have different tastes (although my two eldest are fans of fantasy, which may well be universal). My toddler exclusively enjoys books about bunnies, but I’m sure she’ll be up for some more sophisticated plots
The best way to find books that will engage your children, is work from recommendations. Ask friends with kids, search out the books you loved when you were younger, and read reviews on blogs, Good Reads and Amazon.
