Old Hopking Dark Rum: An Aldi Rum Review

Old Hopking dark rum promises to be a rich and mellow blend of rum for under £12. It sounds almost too good to be true, but for the price, I assure you you can’t go wrong.

My husband got me into drinking rum. He picks up hobbies and interests along the way, which I become interested in and end up sampling. He’s currently a rum enthusiast, which has led me to discover I’m partial to a little bit of dark rum too.

While he’s always on the lookout for a sipping rum, I prefer to water mine down with mixers, so it doesn’t matter as much to me if the taste is a little harsh. Don’t get me wrong, some budget (and not so budget) rums can still taste like paint stripper with a mixer, but if it’s not a sipper, it doesn’t necessarily rule it out for me. Likewise, those overly sugary rums don’t go down so well for my husband, so I end up taking it off his hands and drinking it with a large helping of coconut water.

While while Old Hopking dark rum is good for the price, it still is a little too much on the harsh side if you’re planning to drink it straight. It’s not a sipper – but I don’t think anyone was expecting it to be for that price. They also do a spiced rum, which isn’t usually my thing so I haven’t tried it.

Old Hopking Dark Rum First Taste

I had a little nip, but don’t generally enjoy any brand of rum neat, and this was no exception. Instead I topped it up with coconut water, which made for a smooth and sweet treat.

If you like your rum with a mixer, Old Hopking is a smart buy. I still can’t believe it’s under £12! The only trouble is, it’s almost too good with mixers. Once I’d added the coconut water, it slid down a little too well and I might have consumed a little more than I intended!

It’s a great bottle to bring to a summer barbecue or something, where you’re expecting to mix it, fancy a tropical drink, but don’t want to spend loads.

Don’t buy it for drinking neat. Don’t buy it for anyone who likes to drink rum neat. They will have a much more sophisticated palate than me, and they won’t enjoy it. Sorry!

I liked vanilla and caramel tones, but my husband found it a little on the sweet side. I’d definitely buy it again, especially as the price is so favourable! Some of the more expensive rums from my husband’s collection taste quite similar with mixers, so if you’re not planning on drinking it neat, there’s not much point paying double the price for a similar end result.

Old Hopking Rum Review Overall Thoughts

All in all I’d probably give this rum a 4/5. It’s a great stocking-filler type price and if the recipient enjoys various mixers, this rum would make a lovely gift.

The price is a winner for me, and the fact it’s so easy to drink how I take it (with coconut water) makes it a real bonus. £11.85’s a steal, it’s definitely worth trying, so if you’re in Aldi, I definitely recommend you grab a bottle and pick up some coconut water too.
