We were sent the K’NEX 15210 Beginner 40 Model Building Set (available from John Lewis – affiliate) for Greg to try out. It’s for a beginner level and aimed at children 5 and over. Greg is in reception and turned five a few months ago, so this seemed like the perfect first K’NEX kit for him.

K’NEX 15210 Beginner 40 Model Building Set Review

This K’NEX kit is aimed specifically for a younger audience. It’s set at beginner level which means construction should be easy. We were eager to let Greg get stuck in because since turning five, he’s become very independent. We love to see him swell with pride when he’s done something himself. I can’t help but think it encourages good habits for life.

What can you make with the K’NEX 15210 beginner kit?

The K’NEX 15210 beginner model building kit claims to have the option of 40 different models – not bad for one kit alone. The only catch is you can’t really make 40 at once, it’s an either/or kind of deal. I love how versatile it is.

Inside the kit is 141 pieces (the booklet inside tells you what these pieces should be and urges you to get in touch if there are any missing). Among the many construction options are instructions to build the following:

  • Basic shapes
  • Trianges
  • Arrows
  • Dinosaur
  • Hang Glider
  • Cube
  • Car
  • Sailboat
  • Scooter
  • Skyscraper
  • Airplane

What we thought of the K’NEX Beginner Model Building Kit

Greg and Daddy building a car

Greg chose to build the car as his first project. I’d say this is one of the more advanced builds – especially for someone who is new to K’NEX so we got Dad in on the job. Greg and his dad worked together to build the car but I think Greg would have been able to do some of the easier models himself.

Greg was delighted with the end result  and has been playing with his finished car ever since. I’m not sure that he’ll using the pieces to make anything else any time soon, although there are models that can be made with the unused pieces.

The model building kit is really good and great value for money. I think it’s a handy size that can be used wherever you are (outside/ inside/ at a grandparent’s) and the end models have good play value too.
