It’s widely seen as the beacon of democracy and trade, but London is much more than just commerce and politics. The basis of this city is of course the Industrial Revolution. Modern factories and technologies first began here and spread all throughout Europe and the rest of the world. Soon, in among the smoke and the smog, the billowing smokestacks began to be replaced by magnificent works of architectural art. If there is a softer touch in Europe, with Baroque and Rococo styles being most prevalent on the mainland, then London was more stoic yet beautiful with Victorian, Georgian and English Baroque instead. It truly is the most beautiful classical city in the world. Sure, other places might have high rise buildings all around, but London wishes to keep the classics alive. It does so, in more ways than one. Whether it’s entertainment, architecture or history, this city commands respect from all comers.
Hail the Tower
Built by WIlliam the Conqueror, the Tower of London has been a symbol of British power since the Middle Ages. Monarchs of old, have sent many a person to seek residence within it’s impenetrable walls before they cast judgement upon them. It’s almost 1,000 years old as it was built in 1079 and receives around 3 million visitors each year. It utilizes a wall within a wall and with the complex in the center. This was for security reasons as many high profile prisoners were kept in the Tower, including many of royal blood. The Tower is a castle, making it a fortress which was used to store weapons and house soldiers in the past. The infamous saying of ‘being sent to the tower’ is known all around the world. This implies that when you were sent to the Tower, you would be awaiting your execution. The stones of this beautiful building are still standing strong, keeping their color and remain a stoic strength of the city.
Tales of Middle England
When you’re in London, you have to visit the West End. Here you’ll be spoiled for choice as the list of performances is incredible. However since you are in this ancient city, you should wish to experience the brilliant and legendary tales of Middle England. Shakespeare’s Henry IV and Henry V is performed in west end shows london. These are some of the timeless classics that delve into how complex the lives of kings and queens were.
