How to Make Your Home Cosy for Winter

The dark nights are drawing in, and it’s about to get a whole lot colder. Although it’s always a shame to pack away the shorts and suncream, it’s nice to bring out the baggy knits and cute scarfs. Here is how to make your house cosy for the winter months.

Check on your heating

It’s likely that you haven’t had your heating on much for the past few months with the glorious sunshine we’ve been experiencing, so it’s important to check that everything is in good working order, and doing basic maintenance such as bleeding your radiators. If your old boiler isn’t quite up to scratch anymore, you might want to contact Heating Force for more information on getting and installing a new boiler to keep you toasty over winter.

Swap out your decor

When it starts getting towards autumn, it’s nice to have a bit of a refresh of your soft furnishings to give your rooms a cosier feel. Swap your usual cushions for some cute, autumn-themed throw cushions and add a few soft blankets in autumnal tones such as burgundy or mustard. These are great for snuggling up with on a cold night while you catch up on some Netflix, and also look really lovely folded into a basket as some practical home decor. It’s also the perfect time to add a soft rug into your living space, in earthy tones. You want something that is aesthetically pleasing as it is comfortable on your feet.

Crack out the candles

Who doesn’t love a seasonal candle?! Whether you’re a fan of sweet scents like apple pie or vanilla, or you prefer something a little more earthy such as amber or moss, there is a candle that will transport you into your cosiest autumnal dream. For that extra touch, look for a candle with a crackling wick, to give the illusion that you are sat by a fire pit.

Soften the lighting

One way to make your room feel more intimate and cosy is by softening any harsh lighting. Using a bulb with yellow tones, rather than pure white, can have that effect, and opt for lamps and fairy lights over big, overhead lights where possible. One option would be to buy a lightbulb that can be controlled by an app so that you can get the perfect light every time.

Bring the outside, in

Give the effect of a woodland cabin with some decor based around pinecones and easy-to-care-for plants. You can create crafts with pinecones and fallen autumn leaves or simply put them together to create a centrepiece on your coffee table or mantlepiece.

As lovely as it is to spend days in the sunshine, it can be just as enjoyable to snuggle up on your sofa in blankets, with a good book and a hot chocolate. So, bust out your warmest, most comfortable loungewear, don your softest slippers and luxuriate in the cosiest time of the year.
