Having never helped a parent find a partner, I didn’t have loads of advice for my friend, but I did send a few texts with what I hope was sensible advice.
I told her to take a glam photo of her mum and help edit and upload it. There’s no point in FaceTuning a photo so there’s absolutely no crow’s feet or any other signs of ageing, but I doubt there’s any harm in making sure the lighting is good, and maybe even using a filter. I also told her to write the ‘about me’ bit on her mum’s behalf. Most people are super awkward when it comes to selling themselves and another person is always better at seeing how wonderful they are. If one of your parents wants to create a dating profile, I recommend you write all the good things about them, and let them decide what they want to keep.
Encourage them to look around and not make any rash decisions. If they’ve spent most of their life in long-term relationships, they may have some let over misplaced loyalty. Settling for someone too quickly completely defeats the point of online dating (and the freedom that comes with it).
If a parent does meet someone they like, make sure you give them a proper chance too. Don’t be swayed by the fact your parent is dating someone who is not your other parent. It can be hard to see a parent dating if their divorce was recent, but it’s important to be open minded about who they date.
Who knows, wedding bells might be in their future!
