Don’t be taken aback by the title of this article – it happens, even if no one wants to admit that it does! Having children is an adventure but much of the time, we have children and forget that half of the adventure is in the antics that they will provide to us. Unfortunately, their antics aren’t always great! There are plenty of stories that you may hear about adults being locked out of the house by the children, and in the story, it takes the cops or the fire department to help parents to get back in again.
Having your child lock you out? Yeah, that can be terrifying. Not only are you locked out of your home, but your kids are locked in and you can’t get to them. This makes for a recipe for mischief that ideally, you don’t want to enjoy! Parenting is the job that never ends, and sometimes you have to juggle everyday life while trying to grow eyes in the back of your head. If you can’t call a locksmith when your child locks you out, you need another plan. Here are some of the things that you could be doing while your child is left inside alone!
- Try the entry points. The doors, windows, other entryways and more are there around the house, so go around and check all of these to see whether you can get into the house or not. You may have to climb, but it’s the safest way to get in if you can! If you’re lucky, you’ll find something unlocked and be able to get into the house again. If you can get in, you won’t have to worry about the kids, and while you do this, try to talk to the kids inside the house and have them wait for you by the door so that they know that you are safe, too.
- Check for spare keys. When was the last time you hid any keys in the grounds around your home – if ever? If you know that being locked out is a risk, you need to make sure that you have a spare key hidden for moments just like this one. You can then get back into your house with little to no disruption of the authorities.
- Call for help. If you have a next door neighbour you can go to for help, run and grab them to lend you a phone – especially if you didn’t bring one outside with you. Calling for help is a must and you can then get someone over to ensure that you are safe. You need to get back in as quickly and painlessly as possible!
- Teach the kids to unlock the door. If this has happened to you before, or you believe it could happen, teach the kids how to unlock the door from inside the house. Just make sure that you don’t have to worry about them trying it while you’re asleep!
At the end of the day, children are mischievous and they will do stuff like this. You just have to be ready for it!
