We live in a time where single people are going on more first dates than ever. Thanks to the all the dating apps available, people have got more chance than ever at meeting the love of their life.
This means it’s much easier to arrange dates and get to know someone in real life. The only trouble is, any spark you might feel on an app, might not translate to meeting in person, which means going on more first dates!
For anyone who is new to the modern dating scene, it might be daunting to think about what to wear and how to style themselves for a first date. You don’t want to overdress, but feeling underdressed is no fun either.
I’m here to share my tips for getting first-date ready – however many first dates you go on!
Getting First-Date Ready
These days there are all kinds of impressive options for first dates, and things like dinner and a movie tend to have been left in the 90s. Coffee dates are still going strong, but it’s just as popular to meet your date for a takeaway coffee and a walk.
You have a say in the date you go on, so don’t forget to take the lead or speak up if you think the destination isn’t your thing. It’s important you’re comfortable, so try and sway it so the date is casual and public – especially if you’re meeting up with a stranger. If you stick to this rule, these getting ready tips will always work for you.
Choose a comfy, on-trend outfit

Fashion is in its comfy phase right now. Baggy jeans, stretchy athleisure and joggers are all bang on trend, so make the most of it. I’d go for a fitted top, baggy bottoms and maybe a shacket or a jacket for in case it gets chilly.
Footwear also needs to be considered. Dad trainers are in big right now – for all genders and Doc Martens have never really left the footwear scene. I’d avoid heels in case you have to walk a lot (or you really don’t like your date and you want to hotfoot it out of there.)
Smell amazing
Your personal hygiene obviously needs to be tip top, so make sure you’ve given yourself enough time to grab a shower and brush your teeth. It’s a great idea to use perfume to ensure you’re smelling great. Niche fragrances are a great way to do this.
One scent in particular, is the ideal perfume for a laid back first date. Molecule 01 is a woody, musky, unisex eau de toilette. You’ll smell amazing without seeming like you’ve tried too hard, like heavy floral scents can.
Aside from applying the perfect perfume, it’s also a good idea to visit a dental clinic like Dental Ballwin to have your teeth whitened a day before your date. This will ensure that you’ll have a perfect smile during your date.
Wear makeup you’re comfortable in

A first date is not the time to be trying out new makeup for the first time. You don’t want to find your foundation has oxidised to bright orange over the course of your coffee. Or that your mascara has run so badly it looks like you’ve been sobbing on the way down.
My best tip for makeup is stick to what you know. If you really must try and update your style, it’s probably worth doing a practice run to see how the makeup reacts to your skin.
Style your hair
It might be easier to scrape your hair up or just let it hang, but depending on what your date plan is, that might not be an option. If you’re planning something outdoorsy, it’s best to put it up. You could do a variation on a relaxed braid which gives you a glam edge but is practical too.
Letting long hair just sit may look great in front of a mirror, but if you’re going for a walk or it’s a windy day, you might end up quite dishevelled. Your best bet is to your hair (even if you just quickly run the straighteners of over it or give it a light curl) and give it a little spritz of hairspray to hold it in place.
