How to Get Kids Interested in Oral Hygeine

AD

Keeping my kids clean has always been a battle. From washing muddy hands to brushing their teeth, my efforts have always been met with resistance in those early years. Thankfully the big one graduated to taking care of her own personal hygiene quite some time ago now, leaving me with a baby to bathe and five-year-old to educate.

My son is foundation stage at school. This means his first full school year started in September, and with it came a sudden surge of independence. He can do most things himself now, but he does need supervising. I’m not always certain he remember why we have all these hygiene routines, only that he’s supposed to do them.

While we’ve been off, it’s been a great opportunity to talk about staying healthy. Certain world events got us talking about why it’s important not to spread germs, and what it takes to stay healthy.

Various foods cross your child’s lips throughout the day, exposing their teeth to things that can build up and cause decay over time, such as sugar and acids. I found it helpful to talk about what Greg has been eating and reminding him bits of these foods stick to his teeth and that they’re there even though he can’t see them.

At the end of the day when it’s bedtime, I try and chat with him about why we brush our teeth. I still seem to need to prompt him every night, he remembers to change into his PJs and wash his face, but he needs a nudge to brush his teeth.

Batman electric toothbrush

Recently we bought this Colgate Batman battery powered electric toothbrush to encourage him. It’s great because he loves Batman and he feels incredibly grown up with an electric toothbrush like the rest of the family.

The handle has a Batman illustration on it, along with an on/off button to control the bristles.

The buttons are easy for small fingers to press and they’re simple to work. Perfect for a child to use!

The head vibrates and the rounded part at the tip oscilates to help get rid of any nasties on the teeth. I’ve found this is particularly useful at helping smaller children clean along a the gumline, an area often missed by rookies.

Greg loves the vibration of the bristles as he thinks it tickles a bit. The brush also seems to have changed his attitude towards brushing. The past few days that we’ve owned the brush, he’s not had to be prompted to brush his teeth. He’s remembered to do it after washing his face at night, and he wakes up eager to use his Batman toothbrush in the morning.

I don’t want to jinx it, but the brush has piqued his interest in oral hygiene. I don’t know whether it’s because it’s electric or because of the Batman branding (or a combination of the two) but for now, he’s keen to clean those teeth! A fantastic (cheap) investment if you’ve got a reluctant brusher!

And, of course, it’s also crucial that you pick a dentist that connects well with your child to avoid any negative association with dental visits. You can check out dental implants in concord as they don’t only offer a wide range of services, but their dentists love taking care of their little patients as well.
