It’s that time of year again: spring has sprung and you’re counting down the days until your summer beach holiday. One things that never fails to fill women with dread, is worrying about how they’ll look on the beach. I know that it’s not really important, you know it’s not either. After all, looks shouldn’t matter, but that doesn’t stop you thinking about how you look, does it? I know it doesn’t stop me.
These practical tips will help build the confidence you’re lacking and gain a feeling of body positivity ready for your trip away.
I’m not telling you to diet, because size really doesn’t matter, but general health does. You’re not going to feel great if your diet has been bad and you’re lacking in important vitamins and minerals. A bad diet can make you feel lethargic and sometimes quite unwell. Plenty of fruit and veg will help give you some pep (as well as giving your skin and brain a boost too). Treats are great in moderation too, so you needn’t say goodbye to the chocolate just yet. Drinking plenty of water will help you feel good too, it’ll keep your complexion clear and your skin glowing so try and get your 2 litres a day in starting NOW!
Choose the right beachwear
There was a weird trend in the early 00s for TV shows to grab women who lacked confidence and force them into revealing clothes to ‘show off’ their bodies. If you’re not comfortable in such a state of undress, then don’t worry. Likewise if you want to wear a bikini but worry what others will think, you have to remember it’s your body, your rules. Swimming costumes and bikinis are made for all shapes and sizes these days, so just go what calls to you, if it feels comfortable and you love it, then nothing else matters!
Once you’ve got your swimwear sorted, you need to finish the outfit. Remember you’ll need sun protection for your eyes, so why not go for some large sunglasses and a wide brimmed hat. I also love a beach kaftan, it’s the perfect item of clothing to just throw on, it requires no thought and instantly looks great. Invest in a massive beach bag so that you can bring your accessories with you everywhere, that way you never have to bother with real clothes, but you can still look like you’re dressed if you venture away from the beach.
Look after your skin
I know you’re probably hoping to catch a tan when you go away, but it’s really important to apply the appropriate strength of sunscreen. I’m very pale so I’m factor 50 all the way. I usually apply some fake tan before I go so that I’m not self-conscious of my lily-white skin, and I find even with sun protection I manage to return home with a lovely genuine tan. I also recommend using after sun at the end of each day, even if you haven’t burnt. After sun replenishes moisture and helps make your tan last longer.
Only go away with people who make you feel good about yourself
Since having kids, I’m ONLY going to be going away with my family, which means I’ve pretty much got this one sorted. I do remember what having a group of girlfriends can be like too. Some are more friendly than others. Not all women will build you up and it’s important to remember that if you think someone is being a little too backhanded with their compliments. I don’t know about you, but I’d rather not spend my time semi-naked on a beach with someone who puts me down and makes me feel bad about myself. Choose your holiday companions wisely and you’ll have a fantastic time!
