The show home interior is an aesthetic that has always been sought after. While the styles will have changed since the trend began, popularity has never dwindled.
There are several key rules to obey when you’re hoping to achieve that show home look. For one, you must have absolutely no clutter. The show homes are staged homes designed to sell new properties, the reason they don’t look ‘lived in’ is because they’re not. The only way to get this look is to hide any evidence of residents!
Another rule is everything must look neat, modern and finished. An eclectic vintage finish might be a lovely aesthetic, but it’s not in keeping with the show home vibes. The trick here is maintenance. No half finished DIY should be on show. Peeling paint should be fixed at the first sign, and visible signs of wear and tear need neatening up immediately.
How to achieve show home style
While those rules listed above will help you keep on top of your show home interior, there are also some style ideas that you just can’t ignore.
Below are some things to bear in mind while you’re working on a home makeover.
Neutral tones
If you’ve spent much time looking around show homes, you’ll notice they all have one thing in common. Neutral tones. I think it’s because they’re designed to appeal to the masses, but I also find neutral doesn’t date fast. Patterned wallpaper and coloured walls always gives away the decade (or century) the room was last decorated in. While you might be someone who updates their room regularly, it can’t hurt to stay neutral.
It’s worth pointing out that neutral doesn’t mean beige and cream. Beige and cream definitely were a featured style a few years ago, but modern neutral now tends to be greyscale or muted tones. This means a dash of colour won’t hurt, but it probably shouldn’t be bright.

Sliding wardrobe doors are a fantastic space saver, and look stylish too. Mirrored sliding wardrobe doors are an elite choice. They’re ideal for helping you get ready in the morning; you get a full length view before you leave the house.
Fluffy under foot carpet
You’d never see a worn carpet in a show home, so make sure yours is up to scratch. A thick, fluffy pile is on trend at the moment and it’s easy to see why. Most of us have spent a lot of time at home over the past year or so, and I for one have really felt the benefit of a fluffy carpet under foot. I’ve barely worn a pair of shoes in the past 18 months, and my bare feet have felt like they’re being hugged by a teddy bear every step I take. If you spend a lot of time at home, definitely splash out on a carpet!
It’s the little things
One of the things you’ll notice about a staged home is the attention to detail. They don’t leave walls blank and surfaces empty. Pictures and paintings adorn the walls while vases and trinkets are strategically placed on every surface. If you’re at a loss for where to start, add a canvas to your wall and some potted plants to your bare surfaces.
