Helping Your Child Develop Their Vocabulary

AD

An extensive vocabulary is hugely important for children so that they can develop their skills in a variety of different ways. Words are used so that children can freely express themselves in front of others, understand when and where words can be used and to develop their writing ability. For tips to help your child’s vocabulary, follow the advice from this private nursery in Archway for new activities to try at home.

Using synonyms in front of your child

You can do this in a number of ways, but the most common methods include having writing-led activities or speaking a range of different words in front of your child. If they’re using a word like “cool” fairly regularly, why not provide some suggestions to use instead, such as “awesome”, “interesting” or “amazing”?

In writing exercises, ask your child to list what words they know that are associated with the word “cool” and build their vocabulary in writing sentences. Repeated exposure of different synonyms will help them remember which ones to use.

Play word games

Word association games are a fun way to test your child’s knowledge and what they already know about similar words in their vocabulary. Use different scenarios to build a series of words your child can practice in their free time – games like I Spy, anagrams, match-up games and wordsearches. Making learning fun and engaging will increase the likelihood your child will remember these words in the future.

Stick labels around the house

Add labels to things around the home or buy magnets to stick to your fridge that your child can get involved with. Write post-it notes around the walls and see what words your child can come up with, or ask them to think of different adjectives for objects around the home. Add labels to common household items and see what your child can come up with – this will practice their quick thinking skills.
