As a blogger, photography is a big part of my job. I’ve been blogging five years and I’d like to think I’ve picked up some tips along the way. I’ve definitely made a conscious effort to improve the photos I take (and I’d like to think it’s paid off).
When I look back at when I first started out, I despair at what I once considered to be good photos. If I’m trying not to be too harsh on myself, I think I probably did okay with the tools I had. I’d just like to think that the photos I take now are a million times better.
How to Step Up Your Photography Game
To improve my photos, I did a lot of research. I sought out photos that I liked and analysed what made them good. It’s not all down to expensive cameras – these days phone cameras can take amazing shots. There’s more to good photography than sinking a load of cash into a fancy camera, and these are some of the tips I’ve learned along the way.
Get a proper backdrop
Great photos are in need of great backgrounds. In the early days I used sticky back plastic stuck to a piece of card. It was better than just using my floor, but it wasn’t designed for photographs and often ruined photos with reflections.
Once I invested in proper photography backdrops, my pictures improved tenfold. You can even get custom backdrops for a reasonable price these days, so I’d look into buying a handful if you want your photos to really pop. I’m slowly building my collection and I think my photos are much more creative for it!
Ensure your lighting is great
In my experience, sunlight it the best light. Sadly sunlight isn’t always achievable – especially in those winter months when shooting time might be limited. Invest in some very bright photography lights to get the clarity and look you desire. Never share photos with bad lighting – if you don’t get it right first time then re-shoot when the lighting is better.
Buy props
I like to include props in my photos to make them more interesting. I take a lot of photos of beauty products which can be very plain if I don’t include other items in the photos. I don’t spend loads on props and that has enabled me to build up a varied collection. I tend to favour rose petals, fairy lights, and sequins for beauty shots but I mix it up for other seasons and products.
