Backpacks have long been unsung hero of the fashion world. They’ve always been treated as the clutch bag’s older, more practical sister, but times are about to change. The backpack has never been so on trend and you’re about experience a world of fashion and convenience, with both your hands free!
Everybody needs a backpack
Since having kids, I’ve had to bring a lot of stuff out the house with me every time I go. Despite my kids being older, toilet trained and generally low risk of needing a change of clothes, I still find my hands full every time I go anywhere.
Now that backpacks are bang on trend, I couldn’t be happier about rediscovering just how amazing they are. Here are some reasons why I love backpacks.
Backpacks are hands free!
It’s an obvious one, but backpacks don’t require holding – your back does all the work! This is especially handy if you have kids and like you hands free to hold theirs (or grab them when they’re about do something dangerous). You can take everything you need with you and be entirely unencumbered.
They look stylish
A backpack can be the finishing touch to complete any outfit. It can add an edgy feel to a vintage floral dress, or finish a smart/casual look for the office. Leather-look backpacks are the most popular right now. Thankfully, vegan backpacks are available (made with smooth vegan faux leather) so that you can get the look with a clear conscience.
Backpacks spread the load
Unlike cross body bags or regular totes, backpacks are great for saving your posture. A backpack evenly spreads the load across your shoulders and back, without putting strain on only one area of your body. Bags that sit on one side can put undue pressure on hips and knees, and even cause one shoulder to sit lower than the other. A backpack is a much healthier option when it comes to long term effects on your joints and spine.
They’re hard wearing
Because backpacks carry the load more evenly, they tend to take less of a battering in everyday life. A backpack will last you years, while a regular messenger bag is more likely to take a beating, swinging off the side of your body. I’ve had to replace lots of cross-body bags over the years as they tend to get caught on things and the straps snap.
Backpacks are roomy
If you’ve ever wanted a bag with the miraculous capacity of Mary Poppins’ famous tote, then a backpack is probably the next best thing. Backpacks tend to have a wide, study base than hold plenty of weight comfortably. If you’ve never travelled light and prefer to come well-prepared, a backpack will carry your load with ease.
