Activities to Strengthen Your Child’s Fine Motor Skills

Most of our daily activities require good fine motor skills, from writing with a pen or typing on a computer, to handling cutlery or tying our shoelaces. Parents can help their children develop these skills by encouraging them to carry out activities that require the use of the small muscles in their hands and fingers. Here are some examples of such activities, from a kindergarten in London.

Independent Dressing

You might be inclined to help your child get dressed in the morning to speed up the process but encouraging them to dress themselves independently will help with their fine motor skills. Anything from doing up zips in buttons, to brushing their hair or teeth, all require fine motor skills, so it’s a good opportunity to practise. You might just need to allow a little extra time in the morning.

Musical Instruments

Most instruments require the use of fine motor skills, like plucking guitar strings or using the fingers to press down on piano keys. With that said, perhaps some music lessons might be a good idea for your youngster.

Board Games & Jigsaws

Board games and jigsaws involve the manipulation of tiny items, which will help improve your child’s grip and hand-eye coordination. They are also great for supporting the development of various other skills, like teamwork, patience, and determination. Playing with Lego will have a similar outcome.

Arts & Crafts

This is another great option for helping to improve fine motor skills. Your child will have to grip things like crayons or paint brushes and control them across the page. With plenty of practise, your child’s control will improve, and their artwork will appear neater. Moulding play dough is also great for strengthening those smaller muscles.

Cooking/Baking

If your child is old enough, ask them to help you in the kitchen. Cooking and baking requires actions like stirring and careful pouring, which involves the use of fine motor skills.
