As you can imagine, between lockdown and having a new baby, there hasn’t been a lot of scope to have an evening as a couple. We can’t really go anywhere, and even if we could, I think I’d be too nervous to leave the baby with anyone that I wouldn’t enjoy my evening.
We managed to make some time together last weekend, where we decided to splash out on some sushi, have a glass of wine and stream something together that we both like to watch.
These past few weeks have been tiring with the kids being off, so our evenings seem to slip away from us. It’s so easy to sit down and flick through Facebook for five minutes then suddenly notice it’s midnight and you should be in bed.
The plan

Our main aim was to have a relaxing evening and spend some quality time together. We hoped the kids would go to bed at 7. That’s about right for the five-year-old and our 11-year-old was happy to watch her tablet in her room.
The rest of the plan just involved eating, drinking and watching TV. Our baby stays downstairs with us until she goes to bed, but she generally nods off and cuddles one of us from around 8. Obviously we have to be sensible with the wine, so I only have one glass and sip it throughout the night. That’s one of the reasons I care most about the quality of the wine. Our wine for this date was from Independent Wine as they have a great selection and can deliver the next day.
We decided the finish watching the US version of The Office. We’ve seen it a few times but it’s a good enough show to watch over and over again!
The food

The food is pretty much what drove our decision to have a date night. We’d just found out we have a sushi place in our town and before we had chance to try it, we saw on Facebook that it was closing down the following week. We love sushi and even though it’s expensive, we were desperate not to miss out. It’s not your average takeaway so we felt we needed to try and make it a bit of a special night all-round.
As were were having fish, we knew we wanted a white wine to go with it. If you’re having a similar sushi date, you can find out some information on this blog about pairing white wines.
The drink

We went with Ca’ di Rajo Pinot Grigio 2018, which was gorgeous wine to pair with our sushi. It has a light, fruity flavour which was a very refreshing drink to have on a summer’s evening. The Pinot Grigio was truly flavourful and I could taste hints of mango and peach along with citrus tones.
The wine was a great choice and the perfect accompaniment to our sushi and our evening alike. I don’t normally get to spend my evening so decadently. Sadly the sushi place is now closed for good, but I’m happy to say that I can still restock on the wine!
