Searching for a Slimming World Friendly Gousto Box? This is What I Chose!

affiliate

Using Gousto to help lose weight isn’t a new concept. The Gousto box range seems to be there for fresh, healthy and delicious food, so it makes sense you can easily work it into your diet plan. Don’t get me wrong, it’s not made specifically for weight loss, so there are meals on there that might not fit into my personal weight loss plan, but there are plenty of options that would.

I find the worst thing about trying to lose weight is quickly running out of options, so by opting for Gousto, it keeps my choices fresh and lets me mix it up a little in the kitchen. Before Gousto, my  evening meal I’d planned for weight loss would just be a sad piece of fish and some veggies. It wasn’t even as appetising as it sounds!

Since joining Slimming World I’ve been cooking more than ever. I was fed up of spending ages preparing the food and the meals I made were getting a bit repetitive. I decided it was time to try a recipe box to spice up my weeknight spreads.

I’ve tried Gousto before (long before I was doing Slimming World) and I knew I liked the recipes. I decided to try them again and chose the most Slimming World friendly options.

We plumped for the four meal box and I thought I’d share what we got.

Is Gousto Healthy?

What you need to remember with Gousto is that you choose the meals yourself. So Gousto is healthy and full of lovely fresh ingredients, but you get to choose just how healthy it is. If you’re looking for low fat, low carb, or low calorie meals, there are options there for you. The options do change frequently but there’s always something that will fit in with a Slimming World diet plan.

Is Gousto Good for Weight Loss?

Gousto isn’t designed specifically for weight loss but with all the choices available, it does make it easier to lose weight. I use it for Slimming World-friendly meals, but you could easily calorie count or incorporate it into other diet plans you follow such as Weight Watchers etc.

What’s Inside my Slimming World Friendly Gousto Box?

Slimming World Friendly Gousto Box Sticky Chicken with soy and sesame seeds cooking in the pan

These are the recipes I went for (I don’t have photos for everything because it initially didn’t occur to me that anyone else would care about this):

  • Sticky Chicken with Soy, Sesame & Chilli
  • Nasi Goreng with Sriracha (v)
  • Chilli, Garlic & Jumbo Prawn Spaghetti
  • Warming Moroccan Vegetable Stew (v)

I’ll list the ingredients and syn value below but I won’t go through the method because the nice people of Gousto will probably be cross with me.

Sticky Chicken with Soy, Sesame & Chilli

Gousto Sticky Chicken with soy sesame and chilli recipe and ingredients

  • Chicken thighs (skinless and boneless) 0 syns
  • Fresh ginger 0 syns
  • Toasted sesame seeds 6 (or healthy extra B)
  • Ketchup 2 syns
  • Soy sauce 0 syns
  • Garlic cloves 0 syns
  • Red chilli 0 syns
  • Five spice 0.5 syns
  • Honey  3 syns (approx)
  • Brown rice 0 syns

Total syns for whole recipe (serves 2) = 11.5 including sesame seeds or 5.5 if use healthy extra

Meaning each portion is 5.5 syns each or 3 syns each (rounded up), depending on whether you count the sesame seeds.

This was really easy to make and didn’t take long at all. I’m a super-lazy cook, so I won’t attempt anything that seems like a difficult task.

The end result was super tasty and as I’m greedy, I added extra rice so me and my husband weren’t left hungry. This is a new favourite and I highly recommend this meal!

Warming Moroccan Vegetable Stew (v)

  • Can of chickpeas 0 syns
  • Red pepper 0 syns
  • Mint 0 syns
  • Greek-style fat free yoghurt 0 syns
  • Coriander 0 syns
  • Cherry tomatoes 0 syns
  • Tomato paste 2.5 syns
  • Red onion
  • Vegetable stock cube 0 syns
  • Flaked almonds 7.5 (or healthy extra B)
  • Harissa paste 0.5 syns
  • Cumin 0 syns
  • Aubergine 0 syns

Total for the whole recipe 10.5 syns (serves 2) or 3 syns if you skip the almonds.

This means each portion is 5.5 syns (rounded up) or 1.5 syns each without almonds.

This took a bit longer to make but wasn’t difficult and I still felt like an amazing chef once it was done! I didn’t bother with the almonds when I cooked this because it seemed like a waste of syns when you don’t get that many!

Chilli, Garlic & Jumbo Prawn Spaghetti

Chilli, Garlic & Jumbo Prawn Spaghetti

  • Wild rocket 0 syns
  • Garlic paste sachet 1 syn
  • Jumbo king prawns  0 syns
  • Rice wine 1.5 syns
  • Chilli flakes 0 syns
  • 190g spaghetti 0 syns
  • 2tsp tomato paste 5 syns

Total 7.5 syns or rounded up to 4 syns per serving

Chilli, Garlic & Jumbo Prawn Spaghetti

This was super tasty and filling, I was tempted to cook extra spaghetti but I was glad I wasn’t greedy because it would have been too much. I only used half of the chilli flakes because I’m not hardcore, and I found it had a bit of a kick but wasn’t horrendously spicy!

It was a really delicious low-syn meal.

Nasi Goreng with Sriracha

  • Carrot 0 syns
  • Eggs 0 syns
  • Lime 0 syns
  • Spring onions 0 syns
  • Tilda brown basmati rice 2.5 syns
  • Toasted sesame oil 14 syns (miss this outO
  • Cucumber 0 syns
  • Garlic paste 1 syn
  • Soy sauce 0 syns
  • Sriracha 1 syn
  • Peanuts 15 syns (or healthy extra b)
  • Chilli flakes 0 syns

Total 33.5 syns but if you don’t use the sesame oil at all and count the nuts as your healthy option B then it’s 4.5 syns in total.

This works out at roughly 2.5 syns each or 10 syns if you don’t include the peanuts as your healthy option B.

I realise this is turning into a big story about how greedy I am, but instead of using the rice in a packet, I made my own so I got more. I also used an extra egg each so we got two eggs instead of one. It was delicious though.

Basically, every recipe I tried was gorgeous and much more exciting than the boring meals I was cooking before.

Yep! I’m on SW too and choose Gousto boxes I can tweek to be SW. It certainly stops waste and getting into that awful drudge of cooking the same food each week.

  2. This is really helpful as I get gousto boxes and I’m looking to join slimming world (again)! And wondered if I could tweak to stay with them as most of the recipes I choose are under 500 categories and the recipes include lots of healthy fresh ingredients. It’s the non gousto stuff that is my issue! After reading your post I think I will give it a go. Do you update this post weekly?

Hi Debbie, I reckon you could easily tweak it. I don’t update weekly but I probably should! I tend to dip in and out of my membership so I can’t always see the options. I also like places like Simply Cook for inspiration, they just send you the seasoning so you can kind of tweak everything as you go (then recreate after you’ve found some favourites).
