Smart Globe Myth by Oregon Scientific: A Beautifully Informative Toy that Captures Your Child’s Imagination

The Smart Globe Myth by Oregon Scientific is probably one of my favourite educational toys we’ve been sent to review.  The 2-in-1 globe combines facts, myths, augmented reality, illuminated constellations and fairy tales to capture your child’s imagination and make learning addictive.

There is a running joke in our house that I’m geographically challenged. I didn’t own a globe as a child, and didn’t show much interest in geography, which has probably left me with this gap in my knowledge which my family find so funny.

If I’d owned a globe like this when I was younger, I’m almost certain I’d be so great at geography that I could have been a weather girl. But alas, I was born in the 80s and nothing even came close to the excitement and wonder created by this futuristic smart globe.

The Smart Globe Myth boasts 12 constellation stories, 10 fairy tales, and 69 Earth facts, which means however much of a bedtime-bargainer your child is, you have no chance of running out of entertainment before they finally nod off.

Smart Globe Myth: What’s in the box?

The Oregon Scientific Smart Globe Myth comes as one unit where the globe is attached to the base (which houses the control buttons). The box also contains details about downloading the augmented reality app.

The globe takes 3 AA batteries which are present when the globe arrives, but they seem to be for demonstration purposes, so you’ll need more on hand if your child will be playing with the globe a lot straight away!

A USB adaptor is also included, but I didn’t use it because I was happy with the batteries.

The buttons on the base control how you use the globe. A colourful map is on show all of the time, but the illumination button allows your child to choose the level of brightness of the constellations (which are hidden when the globe is not lit up).

The other buttons are pretty self-explanatory; ‘fairy tales’ tells fairy tales, and the ‘constellations’ and ‘Earth facts’ buttons are equally as descriptive. There is also a volume button which adjusts how loud the stories/facts are told.

The Night Mode is Magical

I must confess, my favourite time to use our globe is at bedtime because it’s just so enchanting to look at. It’s so incredibly beautiful that I want it to be the last thing my children see before bed to lead them into sweet dreams.

I find the colours on the globe very therapeutic to look at, and my son loves to hear the stories before he settles for the night. It is such a beautiful and relaxing toy to use at bed time.

The AR is Astounding

The myth smart globe with dinosaurs on using the augmented reality app

I’ve played with augmented reality toys before, and in the past found them disappointing. My previous experience of AR left me with very low expectations for the Smart Globe Myth’s app, but I was completely shocked at how wonderful it was!

The picture above shows dinosaurs walking the earth, taken as a screenshot of the the AR app on my smartphone. The picture below shows off landmarks on the AR app too.screenshot on the landmarks AR

In the AR map, you can click on the graphics that pop up by touching your touch screen to get more information on the subject.

Our thoughts on the Smart Globe Myth by Oregon Scientific

I think it’s amazing, and the kids love it too!

As someone who has spent most of their life avoiding geography, it’s even managed to interest me (which is something I never thought would happen).

I’m really delighted to have received this globe for the purpose of this review, and expect it to appear on lots of letters to Santa this year.

It can be difficult to find fun STEM certified gifts for girls and boys alike, but I think I've cracked it with this beautiful Smart Globe (Myth Edition). A beautiful nightlight, educational augmented reality and whimsical fairy tales are just a few features this children's globe boasts. READ THE FULL REVIEW & find out where to buy your own!

  1. This globe looks incredible. I’m old fashioned and love the traditional world map the best but love all the other features and the way it lights up.

  2. The globe would be a very creative and functional addition to any child’s bedroom, serving as a soothing light, amongst its educational features. Challenges and quizzes would be welcome, as well ; ) No brainer, a perfect Christmas gift.

  3. I LOVE the way it lights up and reveals information. When I was a child my globe was just a plastic sphere, nothing fancy like this in those days!
