World Book Day costumes can be quite difficult to think of. It’s particularly hard if you’ve left it to the last minute to think of World Book Day costume ideas. I’ve got both a boy and a girl, and these are my favourite low-effort book character costumes.
If you’ve been following me on social media, you’ll have seen some of the fun we’ve been having trying out various World Book Day Costumes for boys and girls. The costumes were very kindly sent to us courtesy of Smiffy’s, but we chose them and all opinions expressed are entirely my own.
World Book Day Costumes
Willy Wonka went down a treat!
Greg is 3 but wears age 4 clothes because he’s tall, its hard to size World Book Day Costumes for toddlers. We went for the age 4-6 costume size and it’s a really good fit. It’s a little on the big side (as you’d expect) but I would expect him to get loads of wear out of this size Willy Wonka costume.
Veruca Salt was thrilled to get her hands on a Golden ticket so she could get a tour of the Chocolate Factory!
My Veruca Salt is far from a spoilt brat though, thankfully!
Emma is 9 but also tall for her age, we went for costumes in age 10-12 which seemed to have the perfect amount of growing room.

Another great World Book Day costume for girls is Sophie from the BFG.
I think this costume has some really nice touches, I especially like the wig and the glasses. The snozzcumber is pretty cool too, I think sometimes the props are just as important as the main outfit!
Wherever Sophie is, the BFG is never far away.
The BFG never goes anywhere without his dream trumpet, thankfully the costume comes with one.
A fitting World Book Day character costume is that of Matilda, famed for her love of reading.
Accompanied by Great Expectations and a newt Matilda is ready to learn (and ready for a spot of telekinesis)!
Probably one of my favourite costumes is the Enormous Crocodile.
I don’t know if it’s the (absolutely perfect) funny face, or the way the costume moves when my little one walks around, but it really makes my giggle. The tail is the best.
Whatever it is, it puts a huge smile on my face when I see my son in it.

I love that books are celebrated with World Book Day. Unfortunately our school is closed tomorrow, due to horrendous weather! Fortunately they were going to celebrate books on Friday anyway, so fingers crossed that we don”t get too much more snow here. These costumes are fab. I got a great BFG one from Asda last year.
Oh no! Ours was snowed off in the end. I think it’s been rearranged for this week though, thankfully. I hope yours goes ahead! I love the BFG costume!
