This is one for the bloggers (or the die-hard readers, hi Mum). I enjoy reading a 2017 resolutions post, but I appreciate this may be boring to some. I even tune in to monthly aims posts other bloggers publish because I’m humongously nosey.
I’m afraid this isn’t going to be all ‘increase my stats this…’ and ‘grow Pinterest that…’ . I appreciate some of you may have tuned in for just that, so I’m sorry to have misled you.
This is about my voice, my self worth and being proud of what I do.
Cash Carraway, my favourite blogger, talks of this syndrome I suffer. Playing down achievements, not sharing what you’re proud of.
Do you know that when I talk about my blog, I’m embarrassed? I say, “it’s crap, don’t read it, it’s just a naff little hobby.”
It is a hobby, but it’s so much more; it’s an income, it’s an outlet, a reason to be proud and way to make friends and reach out to the world.
But I didn’t share anything worthwhile.
I’ve tried my hardest to not share any opinions that might make people tell me an opposing view. My main aim has been to be as banal and inoffensive as I possibly can so as not to suffer a backlash. One negative comment can crumble my confidence and make me worry for days. I moderate my comments. I don’t even have to approve anything negative, I can delete it!
I’ve spent just over a year not sharing my opinions on anything other than make-up and food, and even then, if I don’t like something, I just don’t write about it.
My voice has been lost for a long time, silenced even when I have a lot to say. My unmedicated brain wouldn’t let my opinions out. No one wants to hear that. No one cares what you have to say.
And I’m gradually clawing my way back to being the person I once was. I’m not boring, I’m not stupid, I’m not crazy. I just have thoughts and opinions like everybody else, and if someone doesn’t like them, then that’s their problem.
I have plenty more to say than what I’ve shared on here, and that’s about to change.
If anyone is still reading, then I invite you to do the same. Be liberated by only caring about what’s important (i.e. you).
There will still be plenty of reviews of make up and other such potions I put on my face. It will also still be written in the same way (the posts aren’t about to become all dark and ranty), but expect to see a little bit more of me in it.
The only way to be great is to be yourself. I know this is a truly cheesy sentiment to end on but it’s entirely true.
There’s no point in hiding the bits of your personality that make you different from everybody else. People like to see personality, people like diversity and new ways of thinking about things (and the ones that don’t aren’t worth bothering about).
Cash Carraway says that she tells her daughter to make a fuss, to talk about the things she has pride in and since I’m about her age and she probably doesn’t want to adopt me, I’m going to just take her advice from afar.
I am proud of this blog. It is worth a read and it’ll become a lot meatier very soon.
I’m ready to bare my soul.

Very nice!!
What a great motivational read. Yes, be proud and I’ll take heart from what you said when I feel those moments of ‘should I write this, will I upset people’ If we are good people the sentiment will shine through. Thank you so much for linking up with my #mainyloveschristmas christmas special.
Mainy x
I’m looking forward to it! And this is GREAT! Well done for writing it, and before that, for acknowledging it. I’m new to blogging, but like you, I feel that a negative comment (or anything that I feel means someone doesn’t fully agree with me) worries me for days too. And I too have tried to write in such a way that no one will be offended, but actually, it isn’t my intention to offend anyone.. just to be me! And I think I’ll second your resolution for 2017 – my blog was always about finding my voice, and my voice I want to find! Thank you for sharing this #mainyloveschristmas
Sounds like you’re finding your blogging voice – good luck for 2017! #mainyloveschristmas
