How to Be a Trendy Mum on a Budget

When you become a mum, it can really take it’s toll on your sense of style. That’s not to say mums aren’t great dressers, but your new post baby body might leave you wondering how to dress. I know it did for me too.

Aside from your body changing post-birth, I found my budget changed too. As soon as you add a child into the mix, things start to cost more and you have a little less money for yourself. There was a time when I lived exclusively in black leggings and a shapeless black T-shirt. This look was comfy, but it wasn’t stylish and I knew it.

I think the combination of having less to spend on myself and my body changing shape after giving birth made me feel a little lost in the style stakes. I noticed it most after my first two children were born, but by the time my third arrived, I’d already got some tried and tested tricks to lean on.

Below are my best tips for being a trendy mum without spending loads of cash.

Try a Capsule Wardrobe

You don’t need loads of clothes to look great. In fact, you don’t need many at all. I follow some people on TikTok who swear you only need three pairs of trousers, five tops and a couple of scarves, jumpers and cardigans. I think this level of minimalism is probably beyond me, but I do enjoy creating lots of looks from only a handful of clothes. I’m working on reducing my clothes into a capsule wardrobe.

Instead of wasting your money on loads of pairs of £3 leggings that you need to rebuy every couple of months, choose a few quality pieces and wear them over and over again. You’ll spend less throughout the year and it’ll be kinder on the environment.

Use Discounts Where You Can

If you strive to never pay full price, then you can fill your wardrobe with amazing clothes, without emptying your bank. Look for sales where possible, but if there aren’t any on, search for things like joules promo code before you pay for your basket.

I like to plan ahead, so if I see something I have my eye on, I either keep an eye out for a sale, or check back for discount codes.

Shop Second Hand

Another great way to get your hands on the clothes you want without the price tag that comes with brand new, consider buying preloved clothes. I like apps like Vinted for picking up bargains, people sell their clothes in various conditions for a very low fee. Unlike eBay, the price listed is the price they expect, there’s no bidding war and if you pay for the item, you know it’s yours and getting sent to you.

A fab feature of Vinted is if you favourite an item, the seller sees it and is prompted to offer you a discounted price. Of course, it’s totally up to them if they want to, but I do when I sell on there.

It’s also a good app for clearing out your own wardrobe and generating some money. So you can sell your clothes on Vinted, then buy more with the proceeds.
