The environmental revolution is a movement founded to allow the Earth to live longer and be experienced by our kids and the next generation in all its glory. So it’s important to instill environmental-consciousness to your kids early on, so they too can take part in making our world cleaner, safer, and better everyday.

1. Buy only eco-friendly toys
Of course, our kids deserve to play and be a kid during these times. So one of the best ways you can teach them how to be more conscious about Mother Earth while allowing them to enjoy their time is by buying them eco-friendly toys that you know are guaranteed safe and non-toxic for your precious ones who cannot resist the urge to put toys in their mouths.
2. Avoid using plastics
This rule doesn’t only ring true for toys, but you can teach your children how to care for the environment by letting them get used to the idea of using non-plastic materials, in general. This can be applied to anything from cutlery to shopping bags. Refuse to use plastic bags when going to the groceries and always give them reusable water bottles for their hydration needs wherever they go.
Aside from walking the talk, you have to give them the talk about why it’s important not to be too reliant on plastics in your lives. They will understand this life lesson and keep it for the rest of their journey.
3. Practice recycling and composting
Recycling and composting are just two of the best and most exciting activities you can do at home while instilling environmental-consciousness to your family. There are tons of ways this can be fun for your kids, just like building a recycled robot or turning them to actual games.
Just like avoiding the use of plastics, recycling and composting are also good practices to teach your children even at an early age for them to live a better life and ensure that they too can pass this on to their future loved ones.
4. Use renewable energy at home
Lecturing young children about the importance of clean energy will never be as effective as showing them how it’s done. For instance, if you want to teach them why Massachusetts community solar is good for the environment, the first step is to make sure your house is subscribed and has access to the said source of green energy.
Green energy is the future, so it’s best to familiarize kids with it as early as you can. Educate them why you decided to use clean energy at home, and how the government has been incentivizing the use of renewable power sources for the sake of the planet.
5. Teach them to love plants and animals
Also, essential to the survival of the planet is the symbiosis between the creatures living in it. Teaching kids to care for plants and animals will instil in them deep respect for nature and the roles each organism plays in keeping the planet working in perfect balance. Again, the best way to make sure the lesson sticks is doing it by example.
Opening your doors to houseplants and rescue animals will help kids understand these living creatures better, not to mention allowing them to care for another being is also a great way to teach them responsibility from a young age.
6. Let them see the beauty of nature
Still, you can’t exactly bring all kinds of plants or animals into your home. So you also have to make the effort to take the kids on trips that will allow them to appreciate the beauty of nature. Take note that driving them to the zoo is not the best way to do this, since most of the animals kept in zoos do not really belong there. Instead, bring them to outdoor campouts, diving or beach trips, and wildlife expeditions where they can behold the majesty of nature in its pure form.
The future of the planet depends on the next generation, which is why it’s important to raise them to be environmentally-conscious and aware of the footprint they can (but must not) leave for those who will inherit the planet after them. As a mother, you have a rather difficult, albeit rewarding, task ahead of you, so best of luck!
