Moving house is an exciting time. It’s a time full of big ideas and big plans where Pinterest is your best friend. Imagining where everything will go and what colour to paint your rooms is half the fun of moving. Will you paint in a striking shade? Do you need to change the flooring? What sort of furniture should you go for?
Unless this is your first place, you’re likely to have some furniture to bring across with you. If you’re anything like me, you’ll fall out of love with certain pieces as you declutter ready to move. Another thing is, if you’re decorating you new rooms in your new home, you’ll probably want some new furniture to change up the look.
We’ve moved a few times now and when we straighten up each room, we tend to replace things as we go. Over the past few years we’ve had new sofas, new beds, and a few other pieces to finish off the room. Our most recent purchase was a chest of drawers and a nursing chair to complete the baby’s room for when she arrives (hopefully within the next week!)
My Favourite Places for Finding Furniture
Furniture is available form loads of places these days, not just dedicated furniture stores. I like to mix up the style in my home and collect pieces from all over. I’m not one for a specific theme throughout my house.

Catalogues
Catalogues are a really handy place to buy your furniture from. If you’re short on time (like me), or don’t live near one of those huge furniture stores famed for their meatballs (I don’t) then they’re such a life saver. You can peruse the pages, place your order and it’ll arrive at your door with minimal effort. Heck, you can even use catalogues to buy now pay later and spread the cost.
Charity Shops
Charity shops can be a treasure trove of unique pieces to make your rooms pop. Don’t get me wrong, you usually have to search through lots of stuff you don’t want before you find anything you might like, but the time you put in is worth it. They’re often great for kitting out your first house with. People generally donate pretty neutral pieces of furniture in decent condition and stocking up on the essentials can be a fraction of the cost of buying brand new.
Upcycled Vintage on Facebook
I seem to live in an areas that has quite a few indie designers who upcycle tired old furniture. I often seen items on the local selling pages which are absolutely gorgeous. Most of these people advertising have a Facebook business page and a workshop nearby that you can look around. I’ve found prices tend to vary depending on what has been done to restore the item, but they always seems to reflect the worth of the piece.
