4 Things You’re Getting Wrong About Home Office Design

Working from home is becoming the norm for a lot of people, whether they’re working for an employer, setting up their own business, or going freelance. But you can only be productive if you have the right office setup. Unfortunately, a lot of people make simple mistakes when setting up their workspace and this has a big impact on their ability to work effectively. These are some of the ways that you are probably getting your home office design wrong.

Not Considering Distractions

A lot of people treat working from home like casual office work, but it’s actually very different. You can’t expect to get as much done as you would in a regular 9-5 office job if you’re distracted all the time by other things at home. For instance, if you share your house with kids and pets, or even other family members, it’s easy to get distracted.

It’s important that you consider this when choosing a space for your office and designing it. Make sure that you are far from distractions and you should even think about soundproofing the space if there is a lot of noise. This is the only way to stay productive in your home office.

Not Using Dedicated Office Furniture

People often use an old table and grab a chair from the dining room when setting up their office space. However, it’s important that you use proper modern office furniture if you want to stay comfortable. This usually means having a desk with drawers and shelves, as well as a computer chair. Some people might even find that an office stool or high table is better. If you don’t use proper furniture, you will experience a lot of issues with back pain and repetitive strain injuries.

Filling The Space With Clutter

When your office is also your spare room, it’s easy to fall into the trap of using it for storage. But it’s important to remember that you are trying to create a productive space, not a dumping ground. Make sure that you get rid of anything that isn’t related to your work and keep paperwork in folders or drawers. Don’t make the mistake of piling boxes up next to your desk either as this will be a huge source of distraction for you. Make sure that everybody else in the house understands that this is your office, not an extra storage space.

Forgetting To Make It A Welcoming Space

A key part of your productivity will come from whether you feel comfortable in the space. People are much less likely to settle into work if it’s dark, dingy, or just doesn’t look very inviting. Try to brighten up the office with lots of natural light and some plants that you can take care of. You should also invest in some things that you find inspiring, such as photographs or motivational posters. Just because it’s an office, that doesn’t mean that it has to be boring.

If you can avoid these common design mistakes, you can start creating an office space that you love spending time in!
