Whether it is choosing to buy more organic produce, wear more sustainable clothing, boycott stores that do not treat workers fairly – or being more aware of legal dealings such as Walmart claims – we are all much more conscious about our choices as customers.
We are living in a society where we are much more conscientious about the world we live in, leading us to make better decisions. The reasons behind this are that we are more aware of behind the scenes conditions and agendas, we are asking more questions about the places in which we shop and we are voting with our feet.
So, here are a few factors we can consider when deciding where to shop – as, let’s face it, if we like a certain shop, we are more likely to part with our well-earned money there again and again!

What are their ethical policies?
The very first thing to think about if you want to make more conscious choices when it comes to shopping is to review a company’s ethical policies. Their standpoints on the treatment of staff, how they operate as well as the value they place on customer experiences will reveal a lot about their overarching priorities and strategies to improve.
One way to find out what their ethical policies are is to simply check their website. Most companies, big or small, will post their code of ethics on there for the public to see that this is important to them.
Help the environment with organic products
With everything from meat to fruit, plus shampoo and moisturizer, we have the option to go organic. This means that the products we buy have fewer nasties so are better for our health long term and are also produced in better conditions.
Generally speaking, it means livestock are healthier and grown without feed additives, while fruit and veg are grown by avoiding the use of pesticides and man-made fertilizers. Meanwhile, beauty, grooming and skincare products contain more natural ingredients than chemical ingredients, compared to their counterparts.
Organic clothing is an awesome way to do your part in protecting the environment. Not to mention, there are some awesome organic clothing out there. Click here to find some organic cotton clothing to fill your closet.
Therefore, as a consumer, you are not only doing your bit for the environment, but you are consuming less chemically affected products.
Do they value their customers?
It’s simple enough – if you are going to spend large amounts of money with this company year on year, do they do enough to earn your custom? Take a look at how they reward customer loyalty – do they have a generous loyalty scheme, do they listen to feedback and are they approachable if there is a problem?
Companies are much more expressive in the ways they demonstrate their appreciation of customers, these days because it is often such an important element of their strategies. They know that customers are much more bold and have more choice as well, so they have to keep up with the competition, too.
So, you will often be aware of their policies through their social media, advertising campaigns or requests for feedback. Check review sites too, to get an idea of how companies treat their customers, as the worse the reviews, the less likely they are to place much impetus on making their customers happy – and this will be shared by them.
