Searching for ways to treat very oily hair, but don’t know where to start? You are certainly not alone! Loads of people have very oily hair and are desperate to find a solution (other than constantly washing it!)
I’ve spent ages looking into it and I think I’ve found the best (tried and tested) ways to treat very oily hair. They’re loads easier and cheaper than you might think, so keep reading to see if there’s anything in this list that you haven’t tried yet!

Shampoo Twice
Did you know that your hair (just like your face) needs a double cleanse. Wash with shampoo, scrub the scalp, then rinse – then repeat the action! Cleaner hair usually creates more suds, so you could always shampoo a third time when you start this routine if you don’t believe your hair is fully clean.

Use the Right Hair Care Products
The first thing that you have to do when it comes to treating very oily hair is to ensure that you are using the right hair care products. When selecting the products, you have to go for the ones that are meant for oily hair.
Ideally, you should not use a shampoo that contains sulfates, as they can make your problem worse. It would be best if you opted for a gentle shampoo or a deep conditioner instead.
I like to use the same products my salon uses. They’re a big fan of Olaplex for treatmens, which I buy from them when they’ve got a sale on. If they haven’t got any offers available, I get it from Lookfantastic.
Apply the Hair Conditioner Correctly
It’s important to condition your hair to keep it hydrated. If you have oily hair, then definitely skip your roots. In fact, I believe most people should avoid adding conditioner from the roots.
The ideal way to apply conditioner is to start in the mid-length and pull down to your ends. Your ends are usually the most hydrated part, so make sure they’re fully covered.
You can apply conditioner is by parting your hair into sections and applying it to each section individually. This method will ensure that every strand of your hair is coated with the hair conditioner.
It’s worth noting, none of this will matter if you don’t wash it out properly. Some conditioners leave a residue, so if you feel like that’s what’s happening with yours, you should switch ASAP!

Rinse Your Hair with Cold Water
Using water that is cold to wash your hair is an excellent treatment for oily hair. It closes the pores on your scalp, preventing dirt from getting in there and clogging the pores up. Ideally, you should not do it too often, as it might make your hair much oilier than it used to be.
I’ll add a caveat that you should always do your first shampoo with warm water as it helps the chemicals in the shampoo break down the grease and grime.
Use a Scalp Scrub
Scalp scrubs are excellent when it comes to treating oily hair. They are an exfoliator for the skin on your scalp and can give it a really thorough clean – which can prevent it from getting too oily.
Scalp scrubs are really easy to use – just gently massage a small amount of the scrub into your scalp. You can wash it off after a few minutes and get to reap the benefits!
I like this scrub by Christophe Robin, I got it in beauty box once and that sold me as a life-long customer. I can’t stop recommending it!
Wash Your Hairbrush Regularly
It is important to clean your hairbrush regularly. You should do it at least once a week by pulling out all the hairs stuck in it and using a special brush scrubber and cleanser. If you don’t want to spend much, I would just use your regular shampoo and a toothbrush to scrub the bristles and bristle base.
A dirty hairbrush will make your hair dirty. Oily-haired people need to take extra care of their hairbrushes because oil transfers really easily.
Don’t Touch Your Hair
This may seem obvious, but touching your hair can cause it to become greasier. As a rule of thumb, you should avoid touching your hair as much as possible, and if you have to touch it, do it after washing your hands. This is one of the easiest and cheapest ways to treat very oily hair!
Wash Your Hair Less Often
If you have very oily hair, then washing it every day will only make it oilier and do more harm than good. Instead, opt for washing it every two or three days and see if that helps. If it does, great! If not, then try washing it once a week instead.
This one might be hard to follow because you’ll be walking around with a greasy head. I also once read you can’t train your scalp to be less greasy. So if your hair is oily because you’ve overstimulated the hair follicles, then washing less will work. If you’re naturally greasy, then you can’t change how much oil you produce.
Use Dry Shampoo
Dry shampoo is a fantastic tool to have in your arsenal when it comes to treating oily hair. It basically acts as a blotting agent and will help you reduce how often you need to wash your hair.
The trick for very oily hair is to apply the dry shampoo to the root before bed, then brush it out in the morning. Batiste make a special overnight dry shampoo just for this!
If your hair is very dark, make sure you buy the dry shampoo for dark hair, otherwise you can end up with a white shadow on your roots and it’ll look way worse than an oily scalp!
You can buy dry shampoo in powder, foam or spray. Experiment with the different types that work for you because different hair types have different needs.
Consider Scalp Treatment
If you are looking for ways to treat oily hair, then you should definitely give a scalp treatment a try. A scalp treatment will help soothe your scalp, remove excess oil, and stimulate blood circulation within your scalp, which can help improve the overall health of your hair.
In Conclusion
As you can see, there are quite a few ways to treat very oily hair, ranging from trying to wash it less often to using hair care products meant for oily hair. Thanks to the fact that there is a wide selection of products that you can choose from, you should be able to find a few that will suit both your needs and your budget.
However, if you still find yourself dealing with oily hair after putting the tips mentioned above into action, consider booking an appointment with a dermatologist. They will give you great recommendations and tips that are tailored to your individual needs.
