Women have always struggled with rights, credibility and getting themselves heard.
Although women can adequately do the same jobs as men, there are frequent discussions of pay gaps and being passed over for promotion. Often men are blamed for this, but there are times that other women really don’t help your case. Now is time to recognise that for some females, there is no sisterhood!
We have all come across these fiends, who cause trouble and make you feel bad, but are you aware there is a pattern? There are several distinct categories:
The (Not So) Old Battleaxe
These women are often living with their parents following a breakdown of a relationship, and don’t get round to moving back out for many years. They are usually aged between 31 and 50 (50 is when they marry someone who is 75 and rich).
What they do: They set you up for a fall at work and if you don’t trip, they try harder. They tell anecdotes that contain white lies to make you look incompetent, they undermine you professionally at any given opportunity, they are underhand and make it difficult for you to call them out on their behaviour because every sentence is delivered with a smile.
They are horrid because: They are not where they expected to be in their life. Perhaps they wanted children, perhaps they expected to be further in their career, perhaps they should have moved away but sacrificed all for a relationship that eventually dissolved.
You should be nice to them because: They are sad, they are lonely, they are jealous and they are threatened by you. Be flattered they consider you a threat and make sure you don’t let your guard down, an impenetrable shield is needed around them at all times. They have a way of making you look unreasonable when you speak up, so just grin and bear it. Bask in the knowledge that they will soon be unhappily married to an old man for some money that they won’t inherit until they need a care home themselves.
The Nice But Dim
Seemingly harmless in nature and immaculately turned out, these women don’t seem too much of a problem. But they are the silent danger to women everywhere!
What they do: To be fair to them, they are pretty innocuous and truly full of good intentions but the way they conduct themselves really is unhelpful. They pretend they cannot do things in order to get these things done for them, but they target only men. This in turn lets men think that women can’t cope without them and no woman can get things done herself. This becomes especially problematic in the working world, even more so if your superiors are men from a more sexist generation and your peers are all fluttering their eyelashes because they dropped their paperclips and are unable (don’t want) to pick them up themselves.
They are horrid because: Again, they’re not really that bad. Their behaviour is part laziness and a strong philosophy of “why would I do it if someone else will?” These women are usually trained by their mothers too, so it’s not entirely their fault, bless ’em.
You should be nice to them because: They are nice! They haven’t done anything to you (not personally, anyway) they’re just creating a bit of a setback to womankind.
The Amateur Trouble Maker
Usually a mousy little thing, she can be found lurking at the edge of conversations without much of an input, often hard to distinguish from kind people who are just a bit mousy and quiet.
What they do: They misunderstand and misquote. They use your words against you in a way you would never dream they could be spun. They are not confrontational and won’t like it if you address your grievances, usually resulting in them backing off. They don’t tell tales, they plant seeds.
They are horrid because: It’s probably to gain some sort of status or superiority, there is no other reason to purposefully make a colleague look bad. She’s not a drama queen, if she were she’d thrive on the confrontation, so all I can glean is they want to make themselves look better.
You should be nice to them because: They are a master of twisting your words, so make sure your words are pleasant and few!
The Drama Queen
A great laugh can be had with these girls because they have a vibrant and bold personality but when the attention isn’t on them, they have a way of dragging it back.
What they do: Mostly cause trouble! Don’t worry, they don’t have it in for you, everyone has a turn of being in their bad books. They create trouble, they stop speaking to you, they try and incite blazing rows to get all eyes on them. They are harmful to you because they are immature and can quickly drag you down with them. They are volatile in nature and are only safe to be acquaintances with.
They are horrid because: It is purely an attention thing, don’t take it personally if you fall victim, just try and keep your distance.
You should be nice to them because: They are volatile, haven’t you been paying attention?!
The “I’m Sorry It’s My Hormones”
Agitated and angry are the only two moods they possess and they always look on the edge of a nervous breakdown.
What they do: Yet another type who aren’t directly unkind to you, unless you get in the firing line. They harm general womanhood by implying their mood swings and frazzled behaviour are due to the inherently female problem of menstruating, or ‘the change’ if they are of a certain age. This gives the impression that no woman can be trusted with making good decisions or doing things properly because it will always be ruined and overruled by her period.
They are horrid because: They are on their period? No! Because they have some sort of external stress and they don’t want to be directly responsible for their bad behaviour.
You should be nice to them because: They might actually be on their period! Anyway, it’s nice to be nice!
The Fully Legit Psychopath
Extensive and obsessive research needed to spot these!
What they do: For starters they are probably your boss. Psychopaths get far in life. They lie, they cheat, they have no conscience, they have no remorse and they will stop at nothing. They are control freaks. Now, you have to understand I am not throwing this term around willy-nilly, I have an unusual hobby of psychopath spotting. If you’re interested, I suggest you google ‘psychopath spotting’, you too will become obsessed.
They are horrid because: They will stop at nothing to get what they want and you are inconsequential to them, if they hurt you, they don’t care, you were probably just in their way.
You should be nice to them because: They can do some real damage if you are a threat to them. Stay out of their way! Anyway, sometimes psychopaths kill people, that alone is reason enough!
If you have any to add, get in touch! I’m sure some of you will recognise at least one of these character types and I’d love to hear about it!
