My little preschooler is rocking snow white skin, that burns easily and often experiences allergic reactions. You’re welcome, son.
This means his skin is often a bit flakey, and he’s frequently kept indoors. In fact, I’ve only just settled on a sunscreen that that doesn’t cause any sort of flare up anywhere on his body, and I use that sparingly.
I’d seen other preschoolers on my Instagram feed wearing Kidunk play clothing that was designed for this hot and sunny weather we’ve had (which no one saw coming). So when I was kindly offered a chance to review some on the blog, I was more than a little excited. Could this be the exact thing my slightly scabby son needed in his life?
Spoiler alert: the answer is “yes”.
Kidunk – Protecting Your Kids in the Sunshine
The outfit is made up of two co-ord parts that can zip together at the waist, forming a single playsuit. It also has elastic wrists and cuffs meaning none of it can ride up and expose more skin that you’d planned for. For us it meant that sunscreen was only applied to Greg’s head area as nothing else was really exposed.
The fabric is light,stretchy and cooling, but the best thing about it is that it has a UPF rating of 50+, which provides protection against UVA and UVB rays.
Greg found the outfit easy to play in, even when he was playing some of the more adventurous outdoor games (such as climbing, or throwing himself off stuff he’d climbed. I wasn’t too worried about grass stains, as the fabric is Teflon coated, meaning it resists stains. Sure enough, the smudges he’d added to his suit came out in the wash (Kidunk clearly knows kids well!).
I’m not sure if you can tell from the picture, but there is an option to unzip the legs and sleeves off, creating a short-sleeved, shorts set for those extra hot days. We haven’t done that yet because we haven’t felt it necessary, but if we went away somewhere we’d probably give it a try.
Kidunk Wellies
We also received some wellies but on the day of the pictures above, the ground was too dry to show them off.
I didn’t pair the wellies with the other outfit originally because the ground was dry and it was quite a hot day, which meant the fleece lining of the wellies might have been a bit on the hot side.
I loved the wellies because they have a thread and toggle on the top meaning you can pull them tight over trousers and no water can get over the top. Usually my kids get water over the top of their wellies whenever they wear them, one over-zealous puddle splash and we’re met with tears and soggy socks. Essentially, these wellies are toddler-proof.
My Thoughts on Kidunk Clothing
I think they had a really good idea for multipurpose play clothing for preschoolers and it’s made very well. The clothes look like a trendy tracksuit and I don’t think they look like they’ve been made with all these extra features in mind, which is a good thing. You want your child to wear practical clothing and you want them to look nice too, Kidunk brings both of these features together in their styles.
I’m very fond of clothing that doesn’t stain easily and I think these sun suits are such a clever idea. having a child with such sensitive skin, these suits mean that he can spend a lot more time outdoors. I can cover him up, without him overheating which is a massive boon when he can get rashes from sunscreen or even long grass.
The wellies haven’t really been needed yet, but we’re in Britain so I’m sure they’ll be taking a battering soon. We’ve made a couple of puddle in the garden ourselves when we’ve poured away paddling pool water, and the wellies have really proven their worth.
All in all, I think the Kidunk range is fabulous and that there must be a load of mums like me out there who have children with sensitive skin but also want to give them time outdoors.
