How To Encourage Imaginative Play In Children

Imaginative play is an important part of childhood, helping children develop vital skills and even prepare for the challenges of adulthood. But children need to be encouraged and helped to play imaginatively, as like any other type of play, it’s a learned skill.

In a tech-driven world, this can seem difficult as a lot of modern toys focus on entertainment rather than self-generated or imaginative play, and there is of course the distraction of iPads, game consoles, and YouTube! Whilst modern types of play and entertainment do have value and shouldn’t be replaced, imaginative play can still be encouraged in some quite simple ways.

Strategies For Nurturing Imagination

Here are some ways you can help encourage your child to play imaginatively and get involved yourself.

Although children do learn to play imaginatively on their own, a parent being an active participant can help enhance the experience and encourage them further. Joining in with imaginative play means letting a child express ideas, thoughts, and emotions freely – no matter how silly or strange, if you’re in their world, go along with it!

To help kids expand their games and imaginations you can provide various types of props, toys and ideas. Providing prompts and toys can be particularly helpful for children who struggle to get started playing pretend.

A good example of props you can provide are costumes and dressing-up items. These encourage children to take on different roles and dream up scenarios. Playing with costumes can involve playing pretend at job roles (nurse, vet, fireman etc) or fantasy characters such as fairies and even mythical creatures such as dragons.

Role play is a great form of imaginative play that can help children make sense of the world around them and how they feel.  Imaginative role play can come in a variety of forms including playing shopkeeper, play kitchens and more.

Dolls and doll prams can also play a key role in play. Through playing with dolls children can learn about care, compassion, and responsibility. Art supplies used in conjunction with prompts can also help children creatively express their imagination.

Encouraging imaginative play doesn’t need to involve toys though, there are numerous low-cost or free ways to help engage your child. Storytelling, for example, can be a great way for a child to express ideas. Taking a walk in nature can also lead to imaginative play – who for example, didn’t wield a stick as a pretend sword or wand when they were a child themselves?!

Benefits Of Imaginative Play

As mentioned, imaginative play is highly beneficial for children, so should be incorporated where possible. Some of the benefits include development in the areas of creativity, language, and social skills. Children who can use their imagination well will also be more likely to play independently and feel bored less often.

What do you think? Do you have any unique ways to engage your child in imaginative play, and how do you find technology fits into play time?
