So many people are moving into smaller properties to help reduce living costs.
Whilst living in a big house can be lovely, there’s no doubt it costs more to heat and takes more effort to maintain. What with living costs constantly on the rise, moving to a smaller home can solve a lot of your problems.
We’ve recently been looking at this very thing. Downsizing your home can be liberating. I’ve held on to every baby toy and item of clothing for all three of my kids. I really don’t need to store them, yet still I do, just in case I have another baby.
Moving into a smaller property doesn’t necessarily mean you have to say goodbye to your muc-loved possessions. If you’re crafty with your storage solutions, you can have an organised home storage space that could be the envy of anti-hoarder Marie Kondo herself!

Get Some Sturdy Shelving
Shelving is one of my favourite ways to sort out home storage. It’s so simple, yet underrated. A tall shelving unit can be stacked neatly with everything you want to keep.
You can even go one better and sort things into clear containers so you can see what what’s in there and grab it easily if you need it.
Shelving looks neat inside your home but also helps keep sheds or garages tidy too.
Metal Cupboards
If you’ve got tools, or equipment you want to keep away from small hands, metal cupboards in your shed or garage are ideal.
They’re usually lockable and secure so not only will metal cupboards keep the kids out, they’ll also be safe from any thieves.
Sideboard and Decorative Storage
I love using a sideboard for storage. It makes your home look like you’ve taken time to carefully plan each item of furniture, but in reality it can just be a glamorous vessel for your kids’ craft supplies.
Any decorative furniture with cupboards or drawers are amazing for keeping your belongings out of sight and your home looking lovely.
Bookcases Aren’t Just for Books
Never underestimate how useful a bookcase is. Most people are reading their chosen books on digital devices these days, and bookcases can be quite cheap to pick up as a result.
If you’ve got no books but need a storage solution, bookcases are a cheap and stylish answer to your problems.
We use bookcases in my children’s bedrooms. Yes, we have a handful of books they love and we hang onto, but the rest of the shelves are used to keep their toys.
My son is a big fan of table top and board games, and those boxes can be pretty bulky. We now have them easily accessible on the shelves of his bookcase and he can lay his hands on them without our help.
