Can You Use an AC in a Newborn’s Room?

Naturally, your newborn’s comfort and safety are top priorities. If you’re wondering whether it’s safe to use an air conditioner in the room, the answer is generally yes. However, there are simple precautions to keep in mind.

The scorching summer heat can be harsh on newborns. It dehydrates, irritates, and makes them uncomfortable. Besides, the baby will sleep better in optimal temperatures. When using an air conditioner in their room, here are things to remember.

Properly Maintain the AC

A dirty air conditioner leads to health problems. It circulates dust, dirt, and other allergens in the room, irritating your newborn’s skin and lungs. To prevent this, clean or replace the air filter regularly.

If you have an AC unit with a timer, set it to turn on a few minutes before you put the newborn in the room. The room will be cool and comfortable when you place them in it.

Besides this, a faulty unit produces more emissions than a properly functioning one. These emissions are harmful to your newborn’s health. Carry out timely AC repair, and don’t hesitate to call a professional if you’re unsure about something.

Use a Humidifier

The air conditioner removes the moisture from the room along with the heat. This makes the air too dry, causing irritations on your newborn’s skin. To combat this, use a humidifier in the room.

The exercise will add moisture to the air, making it more comfortable for your newborn. It will also prevent any respiratory problems resulting from the dry air. Other than this, placing a bowl of hot water in the room keeps the moisture level high. Additionally, moisturize the skin with an approved baby lotion to prevent rashes or drying.

Keep the Temperature at a Reasonable Level

You might be tempted to crank the AC up to make the room as cool as possible. However, this is dangerous for your newborn. The ideal temperature for a newborn’s room is between 68 and 72 degrees Fahrenheit.

If the room is too cold, the baby might develop a cold or other respiratory problems. On the other hand, it leads to dehydration if it’s too hot.

Monitor Your Newborn Closely

Even if you take all the necessary precautions, it’s still important to monitor your newborn closely. This is especially critical if they’re premature or have any health conditions. Check on them regularly to ensure they’re comfortable and safe. Cover their hands, feet, and head when necessary to protect them from getting too cold.

Avoid a Direct Blast of Cold Air

Make sure that the air conditioner is not blowing directly on your newborn. The blast of cold air can irritate the baby’s skin, making them uncomfortable. Adjust the vents or use a fan to circulate the air to achieve this.

Layering the baby’s clothing is also an excellent way to avoid the direct blast. Use light clothes made from natural fabrics such as cotton. Always have the baby wear an extra layer of clothes than you would to stay comfortable. You’ll avoid the potential health risks of using an air conditioner while keeping your newborn cool.

Dont Take the Baby to a Warm Place Immediately After Being in the AC Room

Your newborn’s skin will be sensitive after staying in a cool, air-conditioned room. Avoid taking them to a warm place such as outside or in the car immediately after. A sudden temperature change can cause health problems. Give them time to adjust to the new temperature before taking them out.

It’s Okay to Use the AC in the Baby’s Room

As you will realize, you have to take more precautions when using an air conditioner in a newborn’s room. If you do it right, it’s a lifesaver during those hot summer days. When the baby is comfortable, it sleeps better,  and everyone in the house is happy.
