As the environment becomes an increasingly pressing topic for children and adults to be aware of, starting early will prepare your child for being efficient, economic and friendly to the planet. In this guide, from an independent nursery in Birmingham, we take a look at how to raise an environmentally conscious child.
Take your child on outdoor trips
Walks in the wilderness, nearby forests and even trips to the local park can take children away from the home and let them be aware of nature and biodiversity, even in small ways. Nature has changed a lot since we were young, and will continue to change as climate change becomes more of an issue. Children are seeing first hand the risks that the environment around them has by getting close to nature.

Visit science-themed museums
Museums full of science or themes that relate to nature and the world are great ways for children to be taught in layman’s terms about the current impact on the planet. Science museums are able to show children the effects of climate change in more visual ways that can help them understand exactly what’s happening to our planet. With regular kid-friendly talks for children to take part in, they’re able to get involved in projects at museums and do their bit for the environment.
Follow eco-friendly habits at home
Even little things at home can make an impact if your child follows them. Show your child how to recycle at home by making it a game – get 3 different bins and ask your child to figure out which items go in which recycling bin. To reduce food waste, teach your child to eat as much as they can on their plates and learn how much your child eats each day so you don’t make too much. Further, keep extra food in tupperware so children can easily pick out something from the fridge
