University is a hugely exciting milestone in many people’s lives! But choosing where to go can sometimes feel a little daunting with all the choice on offer. Newcastle is just one thrilling option. Regularly voted as one of students’ favourite cities in the UK, Newcastle is incredibly popular – but why?
The universities
There are two universities in the city: Newcastle and Northumbria. Both usually get strong reviews from students who study there, with a range of leading courses available. With a student population of around 42,000 in the city, you’ll be part of a thriving community too.
The people

Newcastle is frequently seen as one of the happiest cities in the UK and much of this is down to the people and culture. It’s a welcoming and friendly place, with the locals creating a bustling and busy atmosphere. And you can sample the culture by visiting the Great North Museum, or experiencing the local passion for their football club, Newcastle United, at St. James’ Park.
The nightlife
Newcastle is famous for its thriving nightlife. With a wide array of diverse bars and clubs, the city comes alive when darkness falls. One popular area with students is The Quayside – a vibrant patch with cocktail dens and unique bars all within a short distance of each other.
The shopping
If you love shopping, then Newcastle could be ideal for you too. There are the top brands all under one roof in the Eldon Square shopping centre. But Newcastle also caters for those looking for something a little different too. Independent retailers crowd all over the city, with unique clothing and décor available. Plus, there’s Tynemouth’s weekly market if you like a traditional shopping experience!
Great food

Newcastle has a diverse range of food on offer as well. Stotty cakes and chicken parmo are amongst the locals’ favourite food when you’re out and about, and they’re well worth trying. Aside from local delicacies, there are plenty of student friendly takeaway options, plus some upmarket gems if you fancy going for something a little more formal.
Movie magic
Newcastle is also famous for contributing locations for scenes from the Harry Potter films. Many of the scenes from Hogwarts were filmed at Alnwick Castle, and it’s quickly become a favourite destination for fans and tourists alike. With guided tours and photo opportunities, it can make for an exciting day out.
Newcastle is, unsurprisingly, a popular student destination. With a fascinating culture, food scene and shopping options, it makes sense for a number of reasons. But if you’re unsure, why don’t you get on a train and explore it for yourself!
