Buying presents for a new mother can be difficult. It’s a time when lots of people will be giving gifts, and if you don’t have a baby yourself, it can be hard to figure out what a new mother needs.
Thankfully, this gift guide has you covered. As a mother myself, I know exactly what I used, what I needed and what I was really glad to receive. Use this guide as inspiration for what to buy a new mother.
Buy essentials
Honestly you can never have too many essentials. Babies are kind of messy, so in those early days, you can never have too many of anything. From nappies to towels, whoever you’re getting them for is going to need a load!
Some of the essentials to stock up on are: baby wipes, nappies, babygrows, vests, blankets, muslin squares, and nappy cream.
Look into something for both mother and baby
Generally, when a new baby arrives, the gifts all go to them. The mother kind of gets overlooked and she deserves a treat too. After all, she carried the little one for nine months, then had to go through birth, before caring for their every need 24/7. You can get special bundles that are a gift for mom and baby. These generally include a few essentials, a few toys and some bits that the mother can use too (often a lovely treat or two).

Novelty can be nice
Don’t get me wrong, novelty items for babies can be wildly misjudged, but sometimes they can be totally ingenious. Check out tech websites or parenting blogs to see what the latest must-have gadget is. It might be something the parents have never heard of, but once they’re received it, it’s the most well-used item.
Something just for mom
If everyone you know is buying presents just for the baby, think about something that’s just for the mother. Chocolate often goes down well, as do fancy teas, soft pyjamas, cosy slippers and anything that can bring comfort. Mums of newborns have really been through it and need a good pamper. Candles a bath bomb, and a box if chocolates should do the trick if you’re in doubt.
A gift voucher
I know some people will think a gift voucher is a cop out, but honestly, it’s a fabulous gift for when a new baby is born. You see, lots of people want to give gifts for the new arrival, and these gifts can sometimes be duplicated. Instead of running the risk of getting the baby its tenth Bumbo chair of the day, get a gift voucher for somewhere that sells gorgeous baby things and let the parents pick once they can check what they need.
A food parcel
When you’ve just had a baby, cooking is the last thing on your mind. Sadly, you still have to eat, so you end up juggling a newborn along with various kitchen tasks. Take the stress off the new mother and get a voucher for her favourite takeaway, or buy a food hamper for her to pick out when she wants the food without the prep.
